This year, however, proved such a sentiment couldn't be farther from
the truth.
Just look at the surge of media attention around Zika virus and mosquitoes. As a united industry, we have all worked to help educate the
public about the importance of health and property protection, especially
from vector pests like mosquitoes. By monitoring the news for developments on the topic, participating in webinars to share insights with one
another, and proactively reaching out to the media about our industry's
knowledge on the topic, we were able to demonstrate the value of the
pest management profession to various reporters and their many readers.
Securing non-paid media may be rare and more difficult as reporters
grow more stringent with their guidelines about company mentions, but
there will always be value in being able to provide relevant information
on a timely subject, especially with a unique angle.
Rather than mourning the loss of traditional media relations, let's
work together and embrace the challenge to continue to show the
pest management industry's importance to the public with avid news
monitoring, creative positioning and proactivity.
