you have no relationships in these areas, determine which events, conferences and meetings
are your best bet for building those relationships, while bearing in mind that you're most
likely to build relationships in a situation where
you share common goals or experience with the
others attending. Then choose three events in
the coming year that promise to provide the
greatest return on your investment and set aside
the time and funds to attend them.
THINK JOURNEY, NOT DESTINATION
Although there are countless ways to get
acquainted with new people, it helps to get your
talking points together beforehand and know
the questions you want to ask. You'll get different responses from different people. According
to Allison Allen, Certification Program director
for QualityPro and a veteran of scores of pest
industry events, networking success requires
you to be "clear on what you have to share and
what you'd like to learn." Focus conversations
around those topics. "First, find out what your
new contact is an expert in or proud of. From
there, share related experiences and move the
conversation toward how the person can help
you or vice versa," Allen suggests.

Successful networkers use a variety of
approaches, but are unified in what not to
do. Try not to place too much emphasis on
size. "Bigger is not better. It's not the size
that matters but the situations people have
encountered and the experience they can
share," says Marillian Missitti, former NEPMA
president and owner of Buono Pest Control
in Belmont, Massachusetts.
Don't limit your conversations to the people you seem to have the most in common
with. According to Missitti, you miss out if
you don't, "Network with everyone. Listen to
everyone's ideas. Make time to talk to young
people and the international people who
attend, as well as the people in suits. You'll
be surprised at what you'll learn."
BE CREATIVE IN GIVING BACK
If there are people who always seem to be
involved in something that intrigues you,
experiment with ways to meet more of those
kinds of people. If they are attending a meeting you are unable to attend, consider following the hashtag for the meeting on social
media to see what people are commenting
on and find most interesting. If you have
something relevant to add, you may find an
opportunity to chime in and begin to build a
relationship. At a minimum, you'll learn who
has expertise and can look for a time to connect with that person later.

Successful networking requires you to be
committed to bringing value to your network.
Precisely how you do this is up to you. You might
look for ways to connect others who have something in common, offer to share information,
or take a leadership role in industry meetings.
According to Panichi, "Telling my story at industry meetings is a way to give back. We give back
by getting involved in PPMA (The Professional
Pest Management Alliance) and by volunteering for committees like LDG (Leadership
Development Group). We go to everything."
LOOK TO THE FUTURE
Ask yourself, if your company were in trouble,
who are the five people you'd like to reach out to
for advice? Start creating that network of people
now and once you have them, keep in contact,
even when you don't need anything. It is important that you meet up again and again. Plan to
grab a coffee at a regional meeting or a lunch
when they are in town. Nothing beats face-to
face time when building strong relationships.
"The pest management industry is one giant
family," according to NPMA Chief Industry
Relations Officer Andy Architect. "In the course
of your career, you may change locations and job
roles, switching hats to a completely new role.
Everyone has things to learn and things they
are expert in. By building relationships for the
long-term, you can continue to draw on your
network for ideas and support." ●
