For example, TAUD's training and
educational programming has been
structured to allow the ability to provide
opportunities at our main office location or
to deliver those same services at remote
locations across the state in a multitude
of platforms. TAUD provides classroom
opportunities as well as conferences, regional
meetings and on-site specific trainings.
Through separate conference events (four
audience-targeted and one general audience
event) association members and nonmembers are served with opportunities
to meet their specific needs. An additional
calendar of training opportunities (140 per
year on average) are provided throughout
the year to assist the members in achieving
or retaining the necessary skills and/or
certifications required for their respective
positions. These opportunities are also
provided in a multitude of platforms with new
delivery methods under investigation (online,
etc.) at the present time.
Making use of TAUD's regional meeting
format to provide communication and
education is another example of providing
opportunities for success. The state has

been divided into 11 geographic regions
that meet on a quarterly basis to hear from
regulators, technical experts, associational
staff, affiliated agencies and each other on
the challenges being faced by the industry. In
a typical two-hour midday format, members
gather to hear various presentations and
have a sponsored lunch in a relaxed local
atmosphere. These meetings have also
become an excellent way to bring local
application to TAUD's state and national
advocacy efforts, thus solidifying our position
of reliable and current information for our
membership. Additionally for the last three
years, through the assistance of associate
members and partnering agencies, utility
members have been provided an opportunity
to obtain three CEU hours for all system
operations specialist classifications at no
charge following one regional meeting a year
in their area.
Meeting the long-term sustainable
financial needs of the association requires
a comprehensive and fluid strategy as well.
The need for education, technical assistance,
advocacy and operational support will exist
regardless of current funding sources and

abilities. By creating alternative revenue
streams TAUD is better positioned to
meet current and future customer service
demands. In this case, alternative revenue
streams means non-dues, non-current
federal contract revenues. Proper execution
of this strategy is absolutely critical for the
life of the organization. "Getting it done,
getting it right and getting it done better
than the next person is far more important
than dreaming up new visions of the future"
(Gerstner, 2002).
For TAUD, the creation of Affinity
Programs has provided building blocks
of opportunity to achieve success in
the strategic plan of long-term financial
sustainability. In Tennessee, these
opportunities are only available through
TAUD which creates additional brand equity
and membership loyalty. The majority of the
Affinity efforts have been in non-traditional
areas of member services, with predominate
focus on insurance and their related products.
Most successful in this area have been the
offerings from Serve Line (leak adjustment
and service lines protection) and Bailey
Special Risk (cybersecurity insurance). Upon
