Shaun Fielder: Being able to learn
from others' experiences is a very valuable
reason for being involved and active in a
peer-to-peer network. I see great value in
supporting these peer-to-peer connections
for the Rural Water system personnel we

interact with. We know many of these
facilities are isolated and are only one or
two-person operations. These staffing
levels can often create an isolation
environment, and peer-to-peer networks
create great opportunities for these
professionals to keep contacts outside
their system. Having the opportunity to
make a phone call or email to a colleague
at another system is of great value.
Vern Steel: One-on-one. When
our system operations specialists find
themselves in a situation where they
don't have any back-up, yet they still need

How does your staff
facilitate peer-to-peer

Randy Norden: One of the first
ways to facilitate peer-to-peer learning
exchanges is through WaterPro.

to get their job done, the association's
field staff is available to come on-site
to their systems and work shoulder-toshoulder with them and train them on
how to complete their jobs. This training
is also provided regionally in classroom
settings, but the one-on-one situations are
extremely valuable.
Our field staff has varying levels
and areas of expertise and as such they
also have the knowledge and ability to
attend a town or city council meeting and
instruct and train those councils on the
duties and responsibilities of making sure
safe drinking water is provided for the
community.
Lara Zent: We create different
learning opportunities for each of these
categories throughout the year that provide
opportunities for peer-to-peer. At our
Annual Convention, we include topics of
interest to many groups. We have a "board
track" tailored to board members of water
systems. This group gets to know each
other and become resources to each other.
At our Office Professionals Conference
last year, we tried something new in two
sessions. We set up round tables for group
discussion on various topics, each with a
facilitator. Attendees chose topic tables
they wanted to participate in and then
switched every 15 minutes. It received
great reviews, and we're planning to do it
again and incorporating the concept into
the agenda of our Engineering Conference.
Our Technical Conference is mostly
tailored for System Operations Specialists.
In addition, our training department
provides classroom training to Operations
Specialists around the state. These classes
are opportunities to meet each other, learn
together and share ideas and information.
The Fall Management and Districts
Conferences are designed for general
managers and board members of systems
and provide opportunities for peer-to-peer.
For the past several years, we have had at
least one panel presentation on a hot topic
where utility managers are the presenters.
These foster a lot of group discussion.
