leak themselves. We also provide a vital
service by saving the system funds that
would have been needed to hire a private
firm to search for the leak.

the work and estimate the amount of
unaccounted for water that was lost due to
the leak. This way, you have a reference of
what was done in the past and what could
also be done if future problems occur in
that area.

What's the most
challenging job you've ever
undertaken as a Circuit
Rider?
It had to be the tornado that hit
Henryville in March 2012. I arrived on
scene at the Rural Membership Water
Corporation of Clark County the morning
after it hit and offered any assistance that I
could be to them. I was able to assist them
in making arrangements with neighboring
systems to provide portable generators
for their booster stations, work crews to
assist in the repair of leaks in the system,
conduct a leak location and spent most of
the next four days assisting Matt Shields,
the system Water Superintendent, in
getting the system back up and running.

What is the best advice
that you could give to
Rural Water systems?
I would advise them to keep accurate
logs of the day-to-day operations and
record any unusual situations that should
occur, such as if a leak was repaired. I
would record the location of the leak,
valves that were closed to isolate the
leak, if needed, the type of repair that
was made, how long it took to complete

My son asked me what a system
operations specialist's job is like, I told
him that once you have been trained and
understand what the job entails and what

I believe that they could operate more
efficiently if the board members would
have a basic understanding of how the
system is operated by meeting with the
employees and spending time with them
to see what the day-to-day operation of
the system consists of, from the location
of the water source, the operation of the
treatment plant, the distribution system
and storage facilities. They could also see
how the employees work with the public
handling customer complaints and the
interaction with them. If they have a basic
knowledge of how the system operates,
they can better understand what needs to
be repaired or replaced in the future and
plan to be proactive instead of reactive to
each situation.

What advice would you give
a young person who wants to
embark on a water career?

SewperCoat ® ,the
only proven 100%
calcium aluminate
solution, has decades of
worldwide performance
in the harshest sewer
environments. Its unique
chemistry resists the
effects of biogenic
corrosion for generations.

How do you think Rural
Water systems could
operate more effectively?

is expected of you, it's a great career
field to get into, with good steady and
stable work-every day, you come upon
something new.
I would also advise the younger system
operations specialists to listen to what
the older ones have to say. They are
experienced and have many old war stories
and knowledge of how the system is
operated. Also, keep your books and study
materials, open them up and read them
again occasionally-you will remember
some things that you forgot and learn
things that you missed the first time. ●

If that isn't enough,
SewperCoat ® is also
backed by a no-nonsense
10-year labor and
materials replacement
warranty.

You've put
SewperCoat
in service.

With SewperCoat ® on
the job, there's one
less thing to worry about.
