Taking Off the Brakes

DiD you knoW it’s almost impossible to
coax an 18-wheeler into going faster
than 10 miles an hour when you have
the emergency brake engaged? Weird.
And of course I found that out the hard
way the summer I worked on my uncle’s
Montana farm. We were bringing in the
hay one fine July day and my job, as
luck would have it, was to operate heavy
equipment. (Sound reasoning on Uncle
Marvin’s part as I have only ever tuckand-rolled out of a vehicle which was no
longer under my control twice in my life.
Pretty good odds for an 18 year old, I’d
say.) So, knowing my practically squeaky
clean record, Uncle Marvin spent about
30 purposeful seconds going over the
intricate details of driving an 18 wheeler.
It was then my job to follow my temperchallenged cousin Bob around the field
so he could load the one-ton bales onto
the bed of my perfectly driven semi.
