Rural Water - Quarter 3, 2014 - (Page 11)
From the President
WHAT A MAGAZINE we have for you this issue!
Just about everything you want or need to know about
managing your water utility is in this issue: strategic
planning, hiring and HR, customer service, professionalizing
our industry and, of course, the all-important, enhancing the
image of your profession!
As water utility people, we work every day under the stringent rules of
the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This year is the 40th Anniversary of
this important act. We congratulate EPA on this milestone! NRWA has been
a significant player in the development and re-authorizations of the SDWA.
As your President, it's my privilege to travel the country, visiting many,
many state rural water conferences where I have the opportunity to meet so
many hard-working, dedicated utility folks that make the SDWA a reality
in each and every town in America. Our mantra - Quality On Tap!
Our Commitment, Our Profession - is the guiding force by which we
operate our systems 24-7-365! We take our commitment to clean, safe
and affordable water very seriously - and I'm very proud of all of you!
However, our utilities need more than federal regulations to make our
systems work. In this magazine, you'll find articles that will help you plan
for the future, prove to your customers and your employees that they truly
ARE, indeed, "professionals"! I'm so proud that most of our state rural water
associations have adopted the term "system operations specialist" in place
of the old term "operator." If we're going to improve our image with our
customers we've got to step up to the plate and SHOW our customers that
we really are "professionals"! If you haven't embraced the SOS, I encourage
you and your state to do so!
And speaking of customer service...I hope you'll enjoy meeting Aunt
Mildred. We ALL have one living in our town. If you can make Aunt Mildred
happy, trust me, the rest of your town will be easy. And to help us "get along,"
we all could probably use the article "Craft a Customer-Centric Culture in
We have a great conference designed for you in Seattle this year! Join
us, October 6-8 for three days of incredible educational sessions, a fabulous
exhibit hall and networking with all of your Rural Water family!
