Rural Water - Quarter 4, 2017 - 47

like the plague until my real job years ago
with Rural Water demanded I use airplanes
to travel cross country. Sam Wade
convinced me of that fact. These days, my
preferred mode of transportation remains
four wheels on the pavement and looking
at the sky through a moon roof.
On the other side of the coin, our No.
2 son embraced flying with a passion. As
a toddler, he would point out the kitchen
window and exclaim, "Airplane-plane,
Airplane-plane!" At the tender age of
13, he began flying lessons at a nearby
municipal airport. The "boss" and I would
hold our breath and watch from the parking
lot as he and his flight instructor would
take off, disappear over the horizon and
return an hour or so later. Then the day
came - even before he earned a driver's
license - when he flew solo. Gulp!
But the clincher was during the Dave
Obey years. If you recall, Wisconsin's
Congressman Obey was the Chairman
of the Appropriations Committee and a
good friend of Rural Water. At a crucial
moment in EPA funding, CEO Rob
brought a private jet to an airport 15
miles from our home along the creek.
"Could my son come along?" I asked. As
you can imagine, onboard he sat wideeyed and grinning from ear to ear - all
the while within arms-length of the pilots
who graciously answered his questions
coming and going from Washington D.C.
To this day, I swear he remembers little
of sitting within arms-length of one of
the most powerful men in government.
After a hiatus of a few years, he came
back to the cockpit - and earned his pilot
license and brought home his wings, so to
speak. Someday, who knows, perhaps the
"boss" and I will hitch a ride as he glides
up and down the river valley. After all, who
among us has not contemplated what it
would be like to fly like an eagle? ●
This column also appeared in Ken's recently
released book UP THE CREEK, published
by Orange Hat Publishing. Signed copies
of the book are now available to Rural
Water members for $15.62, which includes
shipping. Ken will donate $5.00 of each
sale back towards National Rural Water's
scholarship programs. Mail checks (made
out to Ken M. Blomberg) to Eau Pleine

Kennels, 2099 Mayflower Road, Junction
City, WI 54443.
For nearly three decades, Ken M. Blomberg
has written a popular outdoor column
Up the Creek that appeared in several
central Wisconsin newspapers. It currently
appears weekly in the Portage County
Gazette and bi-monthly in the Wisconsin
Farm Bureau Federation's RURAL ROUTE
magazine. His freelance articles have
appeared in many state and national

magazines including Field & Stream, Fur,
Fish & Game, Pointing Dog Journal, Wing
& Shot, Ruffed Grouse Society Magazine,
Bird Dog News, Wisconsin Sportsman,
Badger Sportsman, and Woods and
Waters. A 1976 graduate of the University
of Wisconsin in Stevens Point (UWSP) with
a degree in resource management and past
executive director of the Wisconsin Rural
Water Association, Ken is now retired,
owns a dog kennel near Junction City, WI
and writes full-time.

9950 Dual Channel SmartPro
Transmitter/Controller
The 9950 SmartPro Transmitter takes a simple approach to modularity.
Choose from DC powered only or AC/ DC powered system. The 9950 is ready
to run out of the box with its standard two 40-2omA passive outputs. Add
optional relay modules and binary inputs, and transform your SmartPro in
to a two channel controller. With on board clock/calendar, derived functions,
and advanced relay operation, you have seemingly countless configurations
to meet your process control needs.
