2015 GOHBA Housing Design Awards - 6

President's Message
By Bob Ridley, GOHBA President

E

ach year at our Annual
design Awards Gala, I am
so impressed that I succumb
to the faulty assumption it
could never get any better. But eventually the next year rolls around
and, sure enough, it is even bigger
and more impressive. I don't know
how the Gala Committee manages
to continually outdo itself, but it
always succeeds. Many thanks to
the Committee Chair Linda Oliveri
of Enercare Home services and all of
her dedicated members who spend
so much time and energy throughout the year organizing and delivering this annual industry highlight.

This year, we had an
astounding 600 people
attend the Gala, and
the world class shaw
Centre has never
looked so classy.
After many years as our Gala MC,
ron desjardins of the PMA Brethour
realty Group has decided to retire.
He shared the evening's responsibilities with Caroline Castrucci,
Nisha Cairo and steve Barkhouse.
Each of the four MCs handled a
different element of the presentations, and we are very appreciative
of the masterful job they all did. I
am very pleased that ron was presented with the GOHBA Lifetime
Achievement Award, and, on behalf
of our entire membership, I would

like to thank him for everything he
has contributed to our association
over so many years and wish him
continued health, happiness and
prosperity. we will miss you, ron!
This year, we had an astounding
600 people attend the Gala, and the
world class shaw Centre has never
looked so classy. It would be a challenge to find another venue anywhere in the world that was more
appropriate for a design Awards
Gala, with its stunning vista of our
national capital and its sophisticated environment and food
preparation systems. The design
panels, cocktail reception, dinner,
and after party were enjoyed by
a much larger crowd than during
previous Galas.
This was our second year using
online judging, which allowed us
to introduce several new experts
from across Canada. we also introduced a number of new categories,
including designer of the Year, at
the request of our participating
membership. The Ottawa Citizen
always does an excellent job covering the judging and gala presentation, but this year they went a step
further in creating a special web
site for the Peoples' Choice Award.
This made it much easier for the
general public to participate in the
selection process and vote.
The association's three annual
achievement awards are always one
of the evening's highlights because
they recognize the people and
companies that have made lasting
contributions to our industry. In
order to even qualify for our most
prestigious Enbridge Hall of Fame
Award, companies must have been
members for at least twenty years
and provided continuous support

of our activities. This year's winner
is Potvin Construction, and I am
pleased they have been recognized
for all they have done over such a
long period of time.
The Fred Nielson Trophy is
awarded to the GOHBA Company
of the Year. This time around, it was
won by Tartan Homes. This member has been extremely generous of
their time and talent over the past
few years. In addition to other contributions, they permitted Pierre
dufresne the time to act as our very
able president over the past two
years. They also contributed generously to our Blitz Build project
for Habitat for Humanity Greater
Ottawa in the spring of 2014.
Josh Kardish was the winner of
our Colonel Boss Award to recognize him as our Member of the Year.
Josh has served as chairman of the
Builder developer Council spearheading some of the most critical
campaigns in challenging negative municipal government policy,
including development Charges
and Officials Plan review requirements. All of this work involved
hundreds of hours of his time meetings with city officials, consultants
and BdC members.
Congratulations to all of our
award winners this year. I would
also like to thank everyone who
submitted their best designs as
well as our many sponsors, without
whom an event of this caliber would
not have been possible. The Gala
received rave reviews, and I hope
to see all of those who attended
again next year. For those who
weren't able to join us, I suggest
you find out what you're missing
and buy tickets early for next year's
celebration!
