The Strong

T

our groups visiting The Strong National Museum of
Play in Rochester, New York, often start their day
with a ride on the 1918 carousel in the building's
glass atrium entrance. It's a perfect way to begin a
day of exploring and enjoying the museum's interactive
exhibits, which showcase tens of thousands of toys, games and
play-related objects at any given time.
The Strong opened in 1982 as the Margaret Woodbury
Strong Museum of Fascination, focusing on the mass-produced
dolls, toys and other objects that the wealthy founder
collected during her years of international travel. The
museum evolved and expanded over the years, and in
the early 2000s decided to concentrate fully on its core
collection of play artifacts. In 2002, The Strong became the
home of the National Toy Hall of Fame; in 2015, it added
the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and in 2009 the
International Center for the History of Electronic Games.
Today The Strong is the only museum in the world that is
all about play. At 285,000 square feet, it stretches over more
than a city block and includes more than 450,000 play-related
objects in its collections. Its holdings include popular and
historically significant artifacts, with exhibits that include

airplanes, alphabet and building blocks, dolls, dollhouses and
dollhouse furnishings, teddy bears, trains and yo-yos. Visitors
can view collections of Barbies, Raggedy Ann and Raggedy
Andy dolls, Star Wars action figures, items relating to shows
created by Jim Henson (including Sesame Street, Fraggle
Rock and the Muppet Show), and games from Milton Bradley,
Parker Brothers and other manufacturers.
"We are just scratching the surface as far as what we
display publicly," said Shane Rhinewald, senior director of
public relations. "We do try to rotate objects in and out to
give people a broader glimpse of what's in the collection.
We also have special exhibits; for example, we just opened
"Out of the Vault," a sampling of each of the different areas
in the collection."
Some visitors like to start with a tour of the museum's
12 must-see artifacts. "These are things that you can
only see here, and include everything from the first
handmade Monopoly set to one of the first jigsaw puzzles
that dates back to the late 1700s," said Rhinewald. One
collection that's particularly popular with older guests
is the pinball arcade, where they can actually play on
the machines.
