AODA for
the Facility
Manager
By Jennifer Hiseler, Accessibility Specialist, Quadrangle
How do I know if my washrooms are AODA compliant?
This is a question we hear often, usually with a tinge of panic. There's
probably a deadline coming up and the person doesn't know where to
start. It seems like such a big - and maybe expensive? - undertaking.
Here's the good news: I can tell you from here that your washroom
meets the built environment requirements of the AODA. The trickier news
is that it's not as straightforward as that.

The Accessibility for Ontarians with
Disabilities Act, 2005.
The AODA is a law that was passed in 2005 that allows the government
to develop and enforce specific standards regarding accessibility. The
intent is to set targets and timelines to make Ontario accessible by 2025.
To date, there are two main components: the Accessibility Standards for
Customer Service and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation,
or IASR. Accessibility benefits us all, either now or in the future, and we
all play a part; with the AODA the province provides both education on
what "accessible" looks like, and a compliance framework to ensure it
gets done.

Who Must Comply with the AODA?
The short answer is "everybody - pretty much." If you have one or
more employees in Ontario, there are requirements to be met that are
determined by the number of employees and whether you are part of the
government (or legislative assembly), a private company or designated
public sector, or a not-for-profit. The size and sector will determine what
needs to get done, and by when.
(It's worth mentioning that if you're under the Federal umbrella, other
rules apply).

Accessibility Standards for Customer Service
At a high level, the customer service standard covers things like developing
policies, plans for service disruptions, communicating with people with a
disability appropriately, practices around support people and admission fees,
and what to do regarding service animals. Staff, volunteers, or anyone else
who interacts with the public on the organization's behalf, or are involved
