article, "Time to Plan," we considered taking the opportunity
to plan. Whether that planning took place at a cottage, on
a lake or at the golf course, it
remained valid.
It's now the season of putting that planning into action. If you are on an annual
or government-based budget cycle,
chances are that you have to submit your
plan now, or soon, for 2018. However,
even if your role doesn't involve the budget cycle, that doesn't mean you cannot effect change. Many organizations
operate on a lifecycle "same-for-same"
approach. This means you trade in and
dispose of your horse and carriage for a
new horse and carriage. It gets the job
done, but the opportunity to upgrade to
an automobile is missed.
Missed opportunities are particularly
detrimental. The Carbon Trust (an expert
partner of leading organizations around
the world, helping them contribute to and
benefit from a more sustainable future
through carbon reduction, resource efficiency strategies and commercialising

low carbon technologies) has found in
their research that "Many organizations
have environmental policies and know
that they should reduce carbon emissions from their operations but miss the
opportunity to embed these principles in
refurbishment projects." An opportunity
missed does two damaging things. One,
it means you will continue to have comparable expenditures until this newly
installed equipment reaches the end of
its lifecycle, and two, it results in a falseimpression that there's nothing more
that can be done as the equipment was
recently upgraded. And the "carbon" in
carbon reduction meshes nicely with
energy reduction, which results in less
pollution by the utility to generate and
transmit the energy we need. And it's this
"need" we need to challenge. What do
we really "need"? We "require" energy
to power our systems, but are we using
more then we actually "need"?
So, what's in it for organizations that
choose to pursue the opportunity to
implement a system redevelopment plan?
The Chippawa Willoughby Memorial
Arena in Niagara Falls completed a

redevelopment process on the arena's
refrigeration system. As you may recall
from our last Energy Champion article,
the redevelopment process involves engineering systems to meet today's needs
using today's technologies (not a horsedrawn carriage in sight). The City of
Niagara Falls utilized the Saveonenergy
funding to both identify and implement
a redevelopment strategy. The project
has been developed and constructed
with measured, independently verified results. The delivered result was a
45 per cent reduction of system energy
use (a big reduction when you consider
a typical refrigeration system is responsible for about half of the electricity used
in an arena). Nearly half of the system
energy usage is now gone from the
grid, with the associated system utility
expense of the plant, forever.
I once knew a utility linesman (this isn't
the opening to a bad limerick) who had
an interesting insight into hydro outages.
I recall his lack of urgency when it came
to completing repairs that would get the
electricity flowing again. I'm curious by
nature, so I asked him about his lack of
