wellness works!

to Become a Conference
WAYS

Wellness Superstar

By Dr. Kim

WELLNESS IS THE

hot, new
buzzword today in the meetings and
exhibitions industry. Conferences can take
their toll on participants through lots of
sitting, eating and information to take in.
Our lives are full of triggers. When we go
to the movie theater, the popcorn trigger
goes off. At conferences, the "vacation"
trigger often goes off and attendees are
ready to exercise less, eat and drink more,
and indulge. This impacts concentration
and information retention.
Here are three ways for planners to use
meetings as triggers for wellness - to keep
attendees healthy and productive while
creating a memorable experience:

1

OFFER FOOD AND
BEVERAGE CHOICES THAT
KEEP PARTICIPANTS ALERT AND
FOCUSED DURING THE DAY.

✓ Serve disproportionately more water and
naturally flavored water (infused with
fruit, vegetables and herbs) over sodas.
✓	Place vegetables, salads and superfoods
at the start of the buffet line (people
take what they see first).
✓ Replace candy bowls on breakout
session roundtables with nuts, fruits
and dried fruits.

✓ Offer low sugar beverages (less than
40 calories), low-fat milk and milk
alternatives (almond milk) for coffee.
✓ Choose healthy snacks for coffee breaks
(fiber, whole grains, healthy fats) and
fruit as an alternative to cake for desert.
✓ Maintain smaller portions, including
smaller dessert portions.
✓ Go lean with lower fat options and
lean meats.

2

INTRODUCE BRAIN BREAKS
TO HELP PARTICIPANTS
RE-ENERGIZE, RE-FOCUS
AND DE-STRESS.
✓ Start each conference day with
mindfulness or meditation breaks to set
intentions for the day.
✓ Integrate short, bite-size mindfulness
breaks (video-delivered or live) into
conference sessions to re-charge
the mind.
✓ Include yoga (in business attire)
as a mind-body break during the
conference day.
✓ Offer coloring stations and puppy
cuddling to declutter the brain and be in
the moment.
✓ Make available nap pods for those late
night owls needing to recharge.
✓ Provide a Zen Den or mind-body
zone as a place relax, disconnect and
practice mindfulness.

3

OFFER ACTIVITIES THAT
ENGAGE, EDUCATE AND
ENERGIZE PARTICIPANTS.

✓ Integrate sweat-free stretch
micro-breaks (video or live) into
conference sessions - they provide
instant energy to keep participants

alert, and have time-filler and social
icebreaker benefits too!
Introduce active stand-up applauses and
musical chairs for long sessions.
Include stand-up sections in conference
rooms and stand-up meals.
Offer outdoor recess activity (or
indoors for inclement weather) to give
participants fresh air and playtime.
Provide a wellness lounge as a place
to learn, re-energize and experience
healthy active living.
Incorporate wellness challenges into the
conference app.
Offer after-hours active programs such
as walkshops, walking scavenger hunts,
yoga/spa events and walking buses to
evening activities.
Give takeaways (tips sheets, wellness
warrior kits) to keep the wellness
momentum live after the conference. ■
