Giving Students A VOICE Students explore ideas in the form of TED-style talks K ATH LE E N WI L SO N SH RYO CK S ince its inception in 1984 as a conference on converging technology, entertainment, and design issues, TED has facilitated a global community where people share inspirational ideas in the form of short, powerful talks. Recently, the organization expanded its reach to include a new generation of creative thinkers. Through TED-Ed Clubs, a school-based program that supports idea exploration in the form of TED-style talks, students are being equipped with the resources to pursue their passions, collaborate with others, and practice leadership skills. The flexible, personalized format provides student councils and honor society chapters with an effective option for engaging students. The process also provides a convincing reminder that when students are given a voice, their innovative ideas are worth sharing. The TED-Ed Clubs program is open to students ages 8-18 with the assistance of, at minimum, one adult educator per group of 50 students. Through a series of 13 suggested lessons, students meet to discuss their ideas, learn presentation skills, practice production techniques, and ultimately deliver their own TED-style talks. "In today's world, a person's ability to effectively and creatively communicate ideas can be the difference between endless opportunities opened and endless opportunities missed," said TED-Ed director Logan Smalley.
