From those 200, one winner per state (plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and overseas) is selected, and from the 53 state winners, nine regional winners are selected. This month, we're pleased to recognize our winner from Region Five, which includes West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. Our 2014 Region Five winner is Bradley Brown of Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake, IN. Hanover Central High School is located in the far northwestern corner of the state, not far from Chicago. Located in a relatively rural environment, the school saw nearly 150 seniors graduate in the spring of 2014. Brown, who was near the top of the class, served as the secretary/ business manager of his NHS chapter. Last spring, he was chairman of the chapter's annual food drive, and actively participated in the chapter's tutoring program. His adviser, Stephen Gustas, described him as "an extremely talented young man who puts others' well-being before his own." As a student, Brown offered his talents to many organizations within the school and community. He was a math tutor at school, coached the FIRST LEGO League robotics team at a local elementary school, played guitar in the youth band at church, and served on the Teen Advisory Board for the local library, where he also maintained a part-time job filing books. In Boy Scouts, Brown excelled in both rank and service. He earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2013 following many years of involvement and the completion of his Eagle Scout Service Project, for which he provided service to the local historical museum. In his essay for the scholarship, which focused on service, Brown described how he spent the 750 hours required for his project, which moved and restored a well-known local business to the grounds of the museum. Brown provided leadership to a wide range of scouts and other community volunteers. Following the completion of this task, Brown has continued to serve as a member and volunteer at the historical association. Brown received numerous awards as a student. He earned outstandingstudent status in physics, precalculus, chemistry, algebra, and geometry over a three-year period as a student. As his principal, Justin Biggs, said, "He is exceptional in his thirst for knowledge, skill, and service." For all of his accomplishments, we are proud to recognize Brown as one of the regional winners of the NHS Scholarship Program.
