Activities Exchange Providing Holiday Warmth The student council at Miami Palmetto Senior High School in Miami, FL, spread a message of appreciation among teachers and staff this holiday season. Members attached snowflake-shaped cards to packages of hot chocolate and placed the treats in mailboxes of approximately 200 faculty and staff members. Gift Card Drive The student council and National Junior Honor Society chapter at Del Webb Middle School in Henderson, NV, organized a joint effort to raise funds for the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. Students and staff were encouraged to bring in gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores. Cash donations were collected at lunch, and the grade level with the most donations was promised a snow cone party. The school raised $1,123 in gift cards and $2,102 in cash, for a total of $3,225 in donations. Highway Adoption Litter is no match for the student council at McAllen Memorial High School in McAllen, TX, who adopted an area along the highway to keep clean throughout the year. Each month, students make sure trash is picked up and the area is well-kept. Spreading Love on Valentine's Day The student council at Dakota Jr./Sr. High School in Dakota, IL, sent letters to all of the teachers in their school district asking them to create Valentine's Day cards for people in nursing homes and hospitals. They provided each teacher with 10 sheets of red and pink construction paper and told them more was available upon request. "All classes participated and seemed to enjoy the project," said Stephanie Fox, a student council member.
