On a sunny day at English Bay, tourists
and Vancouverites enjoy the scenery and
the sandy beach. Likely few will pause to
realize that they are on the edge of the
continent at a complex shipping junction
where, every day, containers laden with
all kinds of goods pass on their way from
country to country, continent to continent.
But those who raise their eyes to the horizon
will notice the great oceangoing freighters
slumbering at anchor at the mouth of the bay.
Located near the U.S. border and closer
to Asia than any American port, Canada's
Pacific Gateway is a world-class transportation
network that connects domestic and global
markets. The Port of Vancouver is at the heart
of this network. It is the largest port in Canada
and the third-largest in North America, and it
supports close to one in every five dollars of
trade in goods that flow through Canada.
Canada's railways are an integral part of
this flow of goods. Canada's Class 1 railways
generate more than a quarter of their revenues
from total rail traffic at West Coast ports. The
Port of Vancouver alone includes 680 kilometres
of rail lines served by CN, CP and BNSF. Southern
Railway of British Columbia provides local service
to BC's Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
Roughly $200 billion in trade goods pass
through the Port of Vancouver annually, and
traffic is growing rapidly. In 2015, the port
handled 3.1 million twenty-foot equivalent
units, or TEUs (up 4.9 per cent over 2014); 3.5
million metric tonnes of bulk specialty crop (up
20 per cent) and 8.7 million metric tonnes of
potash exports (up 15.6 per cent). Auto volumes,
total bulk grain exports and bulk specialty crop
volumes were also up. In addition, the port's
current container capacity of 3.7 million TEUs is
projected to increase to 6 million TEUs by 2020.
"Demand for Canadian trade is increasing,
and the Port of Vancouver is growing as a result,"
says Cliff Stewart, vice president of infrastructure
at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the
body responsible for the ports in and around

Vancouver. "To accommodate the anticipated
growth, we are collaborating with governments,
railways, port users and others to maximize the
efficiency of our existing footprint, as well as to
fund critical, trade-enabling new infrastructure
within and around the port. Our goal is to
