Port of Prince Rupert

fixed assets with no increase in crew costs.
Prince Rupert also provides the deepest
harbour in North America, is an ice-free
harbor with no congestion, and is one of
the safest West Coast ports in terms of
navigational risk factors. In addition to the
high-capacity Port of Prince Rupert Container
Terminal, which opened in 2007, there are
two modern bulk handling terminals at the
port - Ridley Terminals and Rupert Grain - for
handling grain, coal, sulphur, and iron ore.
Expansion of the port is already
underway. In Phase I, a section of the
existing wharf was widened, and the
existing terminal was rebuilt. Phase II
expansion, set for completion in 2017,
will develop the wharf further and
increase capacity to 1.3 million TEUs.
Built on collaboration between railways
and their partners in the supply chain, these
and other infrastructure projects in the area
will increase the pacific gateway's freight
handling capacity long into the future.  ■

Le CN est le seul chemin de fer desservant
Prince Rupert, le port le plus proche de l'Asie par
une marge de 58 heures de navigation. Cette
situation permet aux transporteurs maritimes
d'ajouter environ un voyage aller-retour par an et
par navire sans augmentation des coûts d'équipage.
Prince Rupert offre aussi le port le plus profond en
Amérique du Nord. Libre de glace et sans congestion,
il figure parmi les ports les plus sûrs de la côte ouest.
Son superterminal à conteneurs a été ouvert en 2007
et deux terminaux de vrac ultramodernes, Ridley
Terminals et Rupert Grain, assurent la manutention
du grain, du charbon, du soufre et du minerai de fer.
L'expansion du port est déjà en cours. Dans
la phase I, une section du quai a été élargie
et le terminal a été reconstruit. La phase II,
qui doit s'achever en 2017, prolongera le quai
et portera la capacité à 1,3 million d'EVP.
Ces projets d'infrastructure collaboratifs,
entre autres, permettront d'accroître la capacité
de manutention de fret de la Porte d'entrée du
Pacifique dans une perspective à long terme.  ■
