within the system - barriers such as weight
restrictions on shortlines need to be eliminated
in order to fully leverage the efficiency of the
rail network. That's really what shortlines are
looking for. We can keep things going - replacing
ties and worn out rail - but to remain viable
over the long term we need to invest with an
eye towards the future. Dedicated government
infrastructure funding similar to that in place
in the US is the key to making this a reality.

Q

What is the shortline railway industry
doing to get the message out that
this investment is needed?
We have been working closely with the
Railway Association of Canada and have
commissioned numerous reports. We've met
with government representatives from all
political parties. We've talked to all our local
MPs and MLAs. We've been very communicative
with our own customers asking for their
support on this issue. With the help of the
Railway Association of Canada, we've really
started to share our story with anyone that
we believe has a vested interest in seeing
the shortline railway industry succeed.

Q

What is your vision for the future of
shortlines? Where would you like to see
the sector in five years, ten years?
I would like to see our industry continue
to set new records in terms of safety while, at
the same time, finding new ways to reduce
equipment dwell and service variability. This is
the essence of railroading and needs to remain
our focus. Over the next five years I would like
to have secured new sources of funding for
our industry that will allow us to strategically
upgrade our infrastructure in an effort to
better integrate our operations with those
of our customers and Class 1 partners.  ■

communiquer ce message ?
Nous avons travaillé en étroite collaboration
avec l'Association des chemins de fer du Canada
et avons commandé de nombreux rapports.
Nous avons rencontré des représentants de
tous les partis politiques et parlé à tous nos
députés fédéraux et provinciaux. En outre, nous
avons communiqué abondamment avec nos
propres clients pour solliciter leur soutien. Avec
l'aide de l'ACFC, nous commençons à nous faire
entendre par ceux qui nous semblent avoir tout
à gagner à ce que notre industrie réussisse.

Q

Selon vous, que vous réserve l'avenir ? Où
en seront les CFIL dans cinq ou dix ans ?
J'aimerais que notre secteur continue
d'établir de nouveaux records de sécurité, tout
en trouvant de nouvelles façons de réduire
les délais et la variabilité du service. C'est
l'essence de l'exploitation ferroviaire et cela
doit demeurer notre priorité. Au cours des cinq
années à venir, j'aimerais obtenir de nouvelles
sources de financement pour notre industrie.
Nous pourrions ainsi apporter des améliorations
stratégiques à nos infrastructures et harmoniser
encore davantage notre travail avec nos
clients et nos partenaires de classe 1.  ■
