STRUCTURING THE FUTURE

Coming Soon to a Phone Near You - eSIM™
There are already consumer devices
in the market that support eSIM -
some also include a conventional SIM
slot to allow backwards compatibility.
Major component manufacturers are
committed to the inclusion of eSIM, and
it's expected to be supported by most
device operating systems. As a result, we
expect major growth in the number of
devices supporting eSIM over the next
couple of years.
Features also are being added
that will allow Enterprises better
management of the devices they supply
to employees. New features also will
allow carriers to manage devices on their
customers' behalf.

Group, Sprint

e are all too familiar with the
SIM card - a convenient
and standard container for
subscription support.
But as devices get smaller, and as
pressure builds to reduce device costs,
inclusion of a removable SIM with its
supporting connector has become
problematic. Today very few devices
can support multiple subscriptions
without SIM swapping, and handling
SIMs securely can be a complex and
expensive task for carriers.
Enter eSIM, the embedded SIM!
For some time we have all seen the
introduction of M2M terminals, like
telematics modules, that don't require
the use of a removable SIM. Instead, they
are securely provisioned and managed
remotely, and the SIM data is housed in a
secure chip soldered into the device.
This capability now has arrived for
consumer devices, like smartphones,
tablets, and watches. The GSMA's
Remote SIM Provisioning group has
produced a specification that allows
one or more subscriptions to be
remotely provisioned and managed
by the customer through the phone's
user interface. There also are options
for automating the whole subscription
process, eventually allowing customers
to create accounts for new devices via
that device itself.

Benefits of eSIM for CCA Members
What can CCA members gain from
this? Will it be difficult and expensive for
regional carriers to support eSIM?
The potential gains are substantial.
eSIM can open new markets, like the
Enterprise, to more carriers; and carriersupported management features can
enable new subscription models, many
of which, like leasing, have not been
practical for regional carriers. With
eSIM, members now can potentially
benefit from these features that will be

supported by almost all devices, without
needing expensive device customization.
Implementation of remote
provisioning is being supported by
"Provisioning as a Service" offerings from
several vendors. They can provide the
economies of scale needed to allow
reliable eSIM support for regional carriers
by aggregation of provisioning traffic,
while ensuring security of subscriber
information. The GSMA itself is providing
support services to assist device
provisioning on a global basis.
Transaction and data storage security
have been prime considerations in the
creation of the specifications. eSIM is
secured by certificate-based protocols
that are well understood and respected
in the IT industry. eSIM will support all
types of subscriptions like a conventional
SIM, including 3G, 4G LTE, CDMA, and
eventually 5G.
Let there be no doubt that eSIM is at
least in part a disruptive technology, but the
disruption it provides can benefit carriers
that are diligent in leveraging its capabilities.
We believe that it can help level some of
the playing fields that conventional SIM has
tilted against the CCA membership.
