STRUCTURING THE FUTURE

By Scott Wiener
Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer,
Ligado Networks

O

ur country has embarked on
the next phase of the digital
revolution. This digital revolution
will dramatically transform our industries
and our infrastructure by increasing
productivity, fostering product innovation
and enabling more rapid deployment of
new business models.
The Internet of Things is already
influencing our personal lives. Projected
to have an even more profound impact is
the emerging Industrial Internet of Things.
The IIoT has the potential to reengineer the
critical industries that make up our nation's
industrial infrastructure - including
manufacturing, utilities, commercial
transportation and public safety.
Innovations in the industrial sector
will be able to harness big data through
machine learning and predictive analytics,
capture higher operational efficiency
and ultimately create new modes of
competitive advantage. Accenture
projects the IIoT could contribute more
than $14 trillion in global economic value
by 2030. With $6.1 trillion expected to
be added to the U.S. economy alone,
these potential gains present ample
opportunity to extend our world
leadership in wireless innovation.
Companies in these sectors are
deploying digital solutions and need
advanced connectivity to evolve their
businesses, improve operational efficiency

and capture new revenues. In the case
of the manufacturing industry, where
factories rely on heavy machinery,
more secure and reliable connections
are needed to do things like monitor
equipment and oversee smart machines.
An IIoT deployment can extend even
beyond the factory floor to buildings
across an entire campus to support overall
physical plant operations and logistics.
However, delivering on the promise of
IIoT's potential, especially in challenging
industrial environments, requires a unique
approach across a wide range of customer
requirements and use cases. While
networks and networking have provided
the backbone of the digital age and will
continue to play a central role in this
next wave of innovation, revolutions by
definition require new ideas and new ways
of doing things. In the case of supporting
the IIoT, a new twist on an existing
approach means custom, private
wireless networks.
But while leading industrial players
are evaluating how to implement nextgeneration IoT solutions that will move
their businesses forward, without a
customized approach to deliver ultrareliable and highly secure network
solutions, they are hesitant to integrate
new capabilities into their businesscritical operations. Enterprises need
the flexibility to customize a wireless
network to meet their requirements and
preferences. Custom networks contribute
greater flexibility in deployment by
offering a dedicated core and services or
by integrating into a company's existing
infrastructure, or both. Heterogeneous
networks can be designed to enable
multiple services and applications to
operate side-by-side on the same network
or integrate services across multiple
networks and protocols.
Next-generation wireless private
networks will need dedicated, licensed
spectrum to meet their specific needs.

The Power of the Private Network

Using dedicated spectrum, each
implementation can be highly customized
to address a customer's business needs and
unique operating environment. Spectrum
may be allocated to a building, a campus
or a broader geographic area, as defined
by the customer. Licensed spectrum gives
the customer a highly reliable service that
is free from outside contention along with
the security of a private network.
Of course, all of this is only possible with
spectrum, which underscores the necessity
of timely action from regulators to make
sure the finite resource of U.S. airwaves is
being allocated and utilized as efficiently
as possible. Simply, spectrum is the power
behind the success of a private network.
2018 is already bringing tremendous
disruption to the wireless industry. Our aim
must be to extend that revolution to reach
every corner of the critical industries that
make up our nation's infrastructure - with
the understanding that our industry, our
country and the global economy stand to
reap the betnefits.
Making connections is Ligado's core mission.
Our vision is to modernize American
infrastructure by connecting the Industrial
Internet of Things. With our current stateof-the-art satellite technology and plans
to deploy Custom Private Networks for the
businesses that keep this country running,
we're paving the way for future innovations.
