STRUCTURING THE FUTURE

Dramatically Improve Your 4G
LTE Network by Leveraging
5G Technology

D

emand for ultra-high bandwidth
and support for data-intensive
services and apps continues
to explode. No matter who or where
your customers are, they expect not
just more, but better service from
their providers. While no two regional
operators are alike, they share a
common need to increase revenue,
improve operational efficiency and
respond to market conditions.
Operators need solutions they
can deploy within today's evolving
networks to manage the growth
of current services while preparing
themselves for a future that includes
5G. Many options, collectively known
as LTE Advanced or 5G Plug-Ins, are
available for enhancing 4G capabilities
and laying the groundwork for 5G:
* RAN virtualization improves network
efficiency and performance by
centralizing resources and virtual
network functions on a common
platform capable of supporting both
4G and 5G applications.
* Latency reduction provides faster
access to the network, reduces

time to content and enables realtime communications for key
applications such as smart and
remote-controlled vehicles.
* Intelligent connectivity enables the
network to optimize the delivery
of data to end-users and devices
within a combined 4G/5G network,
creating greater network efficiencies
and giving users a seamless
application experience.
In addition, operators can
significantly improve their network
performance by using Carrier
Aggregation (CA). CA provides a
peak throughput equivalent to
a contiguous carrier of the same
bandwidth as the aggregate of the
individual carriers.
CA also provides pooling gains
across carriers, increasing the effective
efficiency by combining multiple
individual carriers and treating them
as one single carrier beyond their
individual single carrier capabilities.
Normally, there are some load
balancing inefficiencies with multiple
independent carriers as compared
to a single larger carrier. CA can
nearly eliminate such inefficiencies.
Additionally, when a high band is
carrier aggregated with a low band,
the coverage of the high band also
improves.
Another promising infrastructure
technology that operators should
consider is Massive MIMO. Like
other 5G Plug-Ins, Massive MIMO
was developed for 5G but can be
beneficially deployed in 4G.
Massive MIMO increases network
capacity and delivers faster data
throughput by dynamically increasing
the number and shape of data streams
transmitted as focused beams toward
THE

end-users. By beam steering a
highly focused beam, we can deliver
a stronger radio signal with higher
data throughput over a greater
distance, using less energy.
In single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO),
multiple data signals can be sent
to a single user. Multi-user MIMO
(MU-MIMO) further increases
capacity by enabling multiple users
to simultaneously utilize the same
time and frequency resources.
In practice, multi-user MIMO
dynamically switches between
single-user MIMO and multi-user
MIMO - depending upon network
conditions and the application
requirements - in addition to
modifying the number and shape
of the beams to deliver excellent
performance to each network user.
Both single-user MIMO and
multi-user MIMO leverage Massive
MIMO by dynamically transmitting
data as highly focused beams and
exploiting multipath propagation
and spatial multiplexing to
simultaneously send and receive
more than one data signal over the
same radio channel.
Massive MIMO is a key
technology enabler for 5G, but
the superior capacity and network
performance it enables can benefit
4G LTE service providers and
end users. As the industry races
to ensure a top-notch customer
experience in the face of fastgrowing demand and even fastergrowing expectations, operators
can improve performance and
revenues by adding Massive
MIMO - including SU-MIMO and
MU-MIMO - capabilities to their
networks.
