CHAIRMAN'S LETTER

Membership: The Foundation
of a Strong CCA

By Brian L. Spurgeon

T

here's no question that an active,
involved membership makes for
a strong association, and it is for
this very reason - the hard work and
dedication of the members - that
Competitive Carriers Association (CCA)
has achieved success on so many policy
issues important to carrier members.
CCA's mission is to ensure wireless
carriers can compete and thrive in the
industry, and while the foundation of
the association membership remains
steadfast and strong, the ever-changing
industry landscape seems to blur the
lines of what was once a more "black
and white" wireless industry.
Wireless means many things to
many people. It is a well-known fact
that consumers want and demand
wireless services in their daily lives,
which is why so many more companies
have begun to delve into the wireless
arena. The ecosystem that traditionally
has supported wireless services is
now converging into wireless, fixed
wireless, cable and different types of
wireline services that deliver wireless
connectivity to the customer. There
is no doubt that competition is good
for the industry, and support from all
sectors of the competitive wireless

industry is key to being successful in
urging competitive policies that keep
new innovative ideas and services for
consumers.
While CCA's core membership is the
foundation of the association, support
from new, innovative companies in
many instances can help strengthen
our advocacy positions. Including
these new, emerging businesses that
support competitive carriers in CCA's
membership will help enhance our
voice and will help us have a greater
impact on policymakers at the Federal
Communications Commission, in
Congress and at the White House.
The Board of Directors has been
particularly focused on ensuring a
strong and healthy membership,
especially in light of the fact that
consolidation continues to plague
the "traditional" wireless industry. The
largest national carriers seem to be
doing everything in their power not
only to eliminate competitors but
also to prevent new entrants in the
industry. This practice is detrimental
to the industry and the economy, and
most importantly, to consumers. CCA is
working each and every day to ensure
the dominant players are not allowed to
continue this dangerous practice.
To ensure the industry's largest
players do not increase their market
domination to anti-competitive levels,
CCA must remain committed to the
excellent advocacy work that supports
competitive policies. A stronger, more
active membership will help achieve
these important goals, and CCA should
look to including new, innovative
companies as members to help expand
our membership and strengthen the
association's advocacy position.
2018 has already proven to be a very
busy year with the Administration's focus

THE

on broadband infrastructure, pending
acquisitions, net neutrality and more.
It is also an election year and many
congressional offices will be keenly
focused on campaign efforts. CCA's
Political Action Committee supports
Members of Congress that support
competitive policies or are in positions
to impact competitive carriers, and it is
an important part of the association's
advocacy work. To find out more about
the only Political Action Committee
supporting competitive carriers, and
to answer any questions on how to
get involved, please contact Maribeth
Collins (mcollins@ccamobile.org) or Tim
Donovan (tdononan@ccamobile.org), or
visit www.ccamobile.org/PAC.
There is no better way to connect
with policymakers than meeting with
them face-to-face at an event and telling
your story first-hand. All members are
encouraged to join CCA in Washington
at any time, but especially for Capitol
Hill Day on June 20. CCA will schedule
meetings with your congressional offices
on your behalf and provide prep info
for a successful advocacy meeting. This
annual event is always a big success, and I
hope to see you there.
A strong membership makes for
a strong association, and the more
we reach out to new companies
supportive of competitive carriers, the
louder CCA's voice will be. I encourage
all current members to reach out to
your contacts that are not already
CCA members and talk to them about
the benefits of membership. We all
benefit from multiple carriers and
multiple vendors providing support
for the competitive wireless industry.
The wireless ecosystem is constantly
changing; let's take advantage of new
opportunities and invite new friends to
join this exceptional association.
