With respect to the biggest challenges faced by retailers today, in particular those faced by independent retailers operating within the fashion world, Gould points to increased competition and the very nature of the business.
"The fashion industry moves at such a fast pace," he explains.
"of course, retailers operating in all categories understand just
how quickly retail changes. The changing styles and trends
within fashion make it that much more challenging for us. and,
there are more and more retailers entering the market, competing for our customers. on top of that, the whole fashion business is changing when you consider the fact that brands are
cutting out the independent retailer and opening up their own
branded stores. There's definitely a place for both, but it's put
lots of stress on some."
Milli has enjoyed some advantageous partnerships through
the years, some that span more than a quarter century. Without

them, a whole other set of challenges would
arise. But Gould believes that differentiating from competitors is a vital way in which
independent retailers can maintain, and continue to grow market share.
"it's the question every retailer is asking: how
to create or offer something that no other retailer does?" he says. "and it's also the biggest
opportunity that we're presented with. Retail
changes so quickly and offers us the chance to
experiment and innovate and to find new ways
to wow the customer. We've been around for
fifty years and we aren't going anywhere. The
way we've done this is by coming into the store
every day continuing to focus on being relevant
to our customer. That's what it's all about in retail. if you keep looking at new ways of doing
things, considering new ideas and exploring
the latest in everything, it will inform your dayto-day decisions and help you maintain your
focus on meeting the needs of your client."
