Protection of employees' rights in the
workplace is a top priority for any retail
human resources manager. Breaking down
prejudice and discrimination to help in the
protection of those rights is paramount.

THE profile of transgender people is undergoing a transformation.

Driven by the success of the award-winning series Transparent, Eddie Redmayne's star turn in The Danish Girl and Caitlyn Jenner's
penchant for grabbing headlines, the trans community has hit a tipping point in heightened public awareness.
Acceptance, however, is still a work in progress. Prejudice and misunderstanding remain a fact of life for many who are transgender or
gender non-conforming-including on the job front.
"Trans people routinely experience discrimination, harassment
and even violence because their gender identity or gender expression is different from their birth-assigned sex," the Ontario Human
Rights Commission (OHRC) notes in its seminal Policy on preventing discrimination because of gender identity and gender expression (April 2014).
It adds: "Under the Ontario Human Rights Code (the Code) people
are protected from discrimination and harassment because of gender
identity and gender expression in employment, housing, facilities
and services, contracts, and membership in unions, trade or professional associations."
