THE RETAIL ROAD: A CAREER PATH
WELL TAKEN
Ryerson University is currently conducting
a comprehensive research study in conjunction with Seneca College; the study is exploring the perceptions of various audiences
about the potential for retail management
as a career. Leading the study is Frances
Gunn, an assistant professor with the Ted
Rogers School of Retail Management at
Ryerson University. Gunn said that this is the
first time there has been a study sample that
has come from such a broad audience. This
study included participants from the general
public, various demographics (including Gen
X and Gen Z), industry input, and secondary
school guidance counsellors.
"We are sensing a slight shift from the last
time research like this was done," Gunn
revealed. "The early indications show that
there are now more positive impressions
that point to the 'attractiveness' of retail as
a career."
The early data indicates that retail is now
seen as being a "people-oriented," "rapidlychanging," and "interesting" career. More
importantly, Gunn says, they are seeing a
shift in the perceptions of what retail is not.
"It is no longer seen as: "boring," "dull," or
offering a "poor salary," she adds.

the old days, if you were a job seeker, you would walk around
the mall with 20 paper resumes, walk into one store, fill out
an application and drop off your resume, and then repeat the
process at another store.
"Today, the same strategy applies digitally," Hendrickson
continues. "If you put obstacles in front of your candidates you
potentially lose out on the best hires. They will find positions
long before they get back to their dorms or homes where they
have a computer. In a competitive landscape, you need to be as
accessible as possible. Far too many retailers are still stuck with
antiquated career pages where you have to log in on a desktop
or laptop to search for and apply to a job."
With dramatic changes in the retail landscape unfolding
by the minute, and as international retailers continue to eye
the growth potential for entry into the Canadian market,
retailers must fight to maintain their market share. Recruitment is a key to keep pace and win the talent wars in this new
retail world.
"Recruitment is going to get harder and harder for retailers,"
Ross concludes. "It is up to organizations to diversify their approach to reach great applicants if they are to be competitive in
the hunt for top talent."
