These top retailers also controlled a network of
approximately 19,200 stores and accounted for almost 417 million square feet of retail store space.
Overall, this group accounts for 88 per cent of
total CSCA Retail 100 sales, 67 per cent of total
Canadian non-automotive sales, and 44 per cent
of total Canadian retail sales in 2015.
2015 Conglomerate Rank Changes

There were several important changes in the 2015
rankings of the CSCA Retail 100. Some of the largest gains and losses in rank were primarily due
to structural changes such as mergers and acquisitions, though many were due to actual gains or
losses in reported or estimated performance.
Rank Increases

The top rank increases in 2015, in order of total
increase, were Bass Pro Inc. (+19), H&M Hennes
& Mauritz AB (+15), Town Shoes Ltd. (+14), La Maison Simons (+13). Bass Pro Inc. moved up 19 spots
on the CSCA Retail 100 this year, from 93rd to
76th, with the opening of a single new store. Considering that their store count in 2014 was just
three locations, the addition of even just one of
their large format stores had a significant impact
on their performance. H&M Hennes & Mauritz
AB continues to climb up the Retail 100 as they
increased their ranking from 58th in 2014 to 44th
in 2015. While partly due to their increased store
count in Canada from 72 to 78, H&M has also continued to gain traction and sales from Canadian
consumers with increased sales performance
from their existing locations.

Rank Decreases

Notable CSCA Retail 100 rank decreases in 2015
were The B&C Group (-24), Trivestment Holdings
Limited (-7) and Le Chateau Inc. (-6). The B&C
Group experienced heavy declines in total sales
in 2015, primarily related to the closure of 10 Benix & Co. stores, 22 Bowring stores, and 8 Bombay Company stores. The B&C Group closures resulted in the loss of approximately 213,000 square
feet of retail space and a reduction in total sales
of about 90 million dollars. Trivestment Holdings
also moved down seven spots in the ranking, but
this was largely related to the improved performance of other companies. Le Chateau experienced
rank decreases in 2014 and 2015 due to increasing competition in the Canadian fashion sector.
Market Control

Canadian-controlled conglomerates accounted
for 61.2 per cent of the CSCA Retail 100 sales,
an increase from 59.9 per cent in 2010, largely
accounted for by the Empire Company Limited
acquisition of the Canadian operations of U.S.
based Safeway Inc. While other countries, mainly
in Europe, did have a presence in Canada's retail
market, their market share pales in comparison
to that of Canadian and American firms. Debate
concerning foreign control of Canadian retail
sales continues to be centred on the presence of
major U.S. retailers in Canada.
