Dan Lyons' revealing memoir of life inside corporate culture

week, Lyons, a career journalist, took a job
writing marketing copy for an up-and-coming tech company. The company,
which at first glance seemed to be staffed with energetic, edgy experts who
loved working together, turned out to have a corporate culture gone insane.
Lyons' colleagues, each an empty-headed corporate cheerleader, endorsed
the unspoken directive that everybody must be happy! They stabbed each
other in the back, degraded each other's work, and spoke indecipherable
coded language. Lyons went looking for a job and found madness.
Corporate cultures like these are easy to mock. Shows like Silicon Valley
and The Office have made an art of it. Yet business leaders can't avoid talking about culture; culture is an unavoidable aspect of life, emerging whenever people form a group. The task for businesses is to influence employees
in ways that produce a company culture characterized by productive, positive employees.
Leading by virtue, not edict
Culture is the norms, behaviours and beliefs that characterize a group.
Culture exists in the interactions between people; it shapes how people in
the group behave and is shaped by the people in the group. Culture is flexible (it changes over time) and inflexible (some traditions cannot change
without destroying the culture).
