IT'S often said that retail is about
detail. And everyone who's ever
worked in the industry even for a
minute would likely agree. But as
true as that statement might be,
retail, more than anything else, is
about people. Without people, retail is...well...nothing. Companies
are built by people and are driven and managed by people. People are and always will be the one
critical element of retail that can't ever be replaced.
In this special Human Resources Issue of Canadian Retailer, we
focus on the topics that are related specifically to the department
that takes care of the people that make retail the greatest industry
in the world.
We start by exploring the issue of mental health in the workplace
(Healthy Minds on pg. 18) and look at the ways a positive corporate
culture can help improve the health and wellbeing of employees.
The ways retail HR departments are sourcing and attracting top talent today is changing. We take a look at how the proliferation of
the use of digital devices (Hiring in the Digital Age on pg. 22) has
spawned a whole new array of recruitment tools.
Millennials (The Millennial Effect on pg. 26) are also highlighted
in this issue as we examine their attributes as employees and how
they might contribute to the Canadian workforce over the years to
come. Employee engagement (Working Together-Really Together
on pg. 30), one of the key influencers to a positive corporate culture, is also analyzed. And we take a look at the latest technologies
(Transforming Retail HR through New Technology on pg. 34) that
are helping to make the job of today's retail HR professional more
efficient and effective.
In addition, a special contribution from Ryerson University's Centre for Shopping Centre Activity (The CSCA Retail 100 on page 12)
reveals insights into Canada's most powerful retail chains operating today.
