Special grocery issue provides food
for thought concerning the state of
canadian grocery
there aren't too many things on the

planet that connect us all. Cultures and
ways of life differ between continents and
countries across the globe. Perspectives
on social values and community vary.
Even the way people work and approach
each day contrasts from one society to the
next. But, the one thing that every person
in the world has in common is the need-and at times love-of food.
In fact, there are few things more important, and perhaps more exciting and ritualistic, than that of food. For this reason, it's no wonder that
Canadian grocers, and grocers around the world, are constantly vying
to differentiate their businesses and offerings to lure today's consumer
into their aisles.
Within this issue of Canadian Retailer, we bring together some of the
country's top grocery analysts to discuss the trends and influencers
within the industry and to determine where the challenges and opportunities might lie for Canadian grocers.
We also take a look at Retail Council of Canada's (RCC) Grocery Division more than three years after its inception to recognize its achievements, as well as the ongoing work to push for regulations that improve
quality, safety and service for retailers and their customers.
And, in an effort to inspire, we also highlight the creativity and innovation of international grocery retailer, Bilder & De Clercq. The independent grocer has turned heads in its native Netherlands because
of its unique approach to grocery, differentiated brand and supreme
focus on its customer. Bilder & De Clercq will be joined onstage by
Eataly, another international grocer that is delighting and inspiring
with their offering and service, at RCC's STORE Conference 2015
to speak to delegates about the philosophy behind their respective
brands and models.
