Retail Council of Canada
takes bite out of grocery's
top issues
Grocery Division ready for an active 2017
BY RANDY SCOTLAND

THESE are dynamic times for grocery retailers in Canada, who must balance a complex
and fluctuating array of challenges to maintain equilibrium. From food safety and environmental protocols, to regulatory compliance and shifting consumer dynamics, the
grocery journey is a white-knuckle ride like no other in retail today.
To help smooth out the bumps on this roller-coaster track, Retail Council of Canada
(RCC) is ramping up resources to further enhance its member service.
Key to that is the promotion of Jason McLinton as the new Vice President of the association's Grocery Division and Regulatory Affairs, a move that came four years to the day
after joining RCC as Senior Director of Federal Government Relations.
McLinton's appointment is a response to the
scope and importance of the demands confronting grocery members, said David Wilkes, RCC's
Senior Vice President, Government Relations and
Grocery Division.
"Jason's promotion was a recognition of his
work as well as a recognition of the demands on
the grocery community. It's important that we
demonstrate our commitment to fulfilling those
demands," Wilkes said.
Agenda for 2017

The Grocery Division has a full docket this
year, including the production of new toolkits,
guides and handbooks on changing food regulations, labelling requirements, anti-spam regulation and, significantly, how retailers can
take advantage of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the ballyhooed
trade deal between Canada and the European Union.
"The value that RCC is providing for our grocery members-and indeed all our members-
is really around an advocacy focus," Wilkes said. "There are a number of advocacy challenges at the municipal, provincial and federal levels that are impacting the grocery industry."
Wilkes points out that the great work done by RCC's Grocery Division wouldn't be
possible without the strong support and leadership of member committees which include
subject matter experts who focus on food safety, health and wellness, animal welfare and
the environment.
In addition, regional committees, like Quebec's advisory board for grocery, overseen
by Sobeys Quebec's Alain Dumas, ensure that RCC effectively addresses those provincial and municipal challenges that are affecting members in the areas they operate.
"Selling food is a tremendous responsibility. And it's a very highly regulated category
of the retail sector," says Wilkes. "We work with our committees and government in order
to provide an industry perspective."
One such perspective involves the areas where McLinton has taken a lead role around
food safety and some of the policies that are being developed by the federal government,
including the devising of a national food policy.
