National food policy
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
outlined the parameters of this initiative in his mandate letter to Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, instructing
him to "develop a food policy that
promotes healthy living and safe
food by putting more healthy, highquality food, produced by Canadian
ranchers and farmers, on the tables
of families across the country."
"That's not a regulatory file per
se, and not a food safety file per se,"
McLinton explains, "but it's a real
opportunity, first of all, for the grocery members to demonstrate to the
federal government the great work
that they're already doing on a voluntary basis around health, the environment, sustainability, food waste,
and other things of that nature. But
it's also an opportunity for grocery
members to address some historical
irritants in that area."
McLinton is especially keen on the
potential a new national food policy
could have for members and is heartened to be working on the file so early on in its development.
"The time that we can really influence the shaping of the policy is at
the beginning of the process. As the
proactive voice of retail in the country we're engaging all of the federal
departments that are responsible

for food [Agriculture Canada,
Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency]
to help shape their thinking,
and indeed, the drafting of the
document. So, in terms of next
steps, I anticipate an open-ended document by the end of the
coming spring."
Food safety a top priority
