The CEO's new role

None of this can happen without leadership from the top,
and even here the rules are changing, according to Dr. David
Weiss, President and CEO of Weiss International Ltd.
"What we need in our organizations are leaders who are
effective at drawing out the innovative capacities of their
employees and teams," he said. "We have to build leaders of
innovation, not people who are ultimately going to be just innovative thinkers. In fact, sometimes innovative thinkers are
worse, because they lack a lot of emotional intelligence. They
make everybody else a lot less innovative. They become problems within organizations."
This poses important implications for HR recruiters and the
executive skillsets they must seek to fill, Weiss said.
"Leaders, as we look for them nowadays, have to be able to
deal with ambiguity and uncertainty-they have to be able to
deal with things in a different kind of way, and toggle between
what they know and what they don't know. And if they can't do
that, they won't be effective.
"And they have to, when they're dealing with complex issues,
be able to work with diverse teams, because that dynamic is
what's going to generate new ideas. And if they can't-if they're
uncomfortable in that space-they're probably not going to be
able to handle complex problems effectively."

and the part that HR played in the behind-the-scenes drama.
The two store banners coexisted until the effects of the 2008
recession which, in combination with the rise of online sales,
began to strain the bottom line of both big-box chains. The
rivalry between the banners for sales intensified, placing the
retailer in an untenable position.
Scarlett picked up the narrative: "We knew what we were doing was not sustainable and radical change was required. The
customer told us exactly what we needed to. We needed to consolidate under the Best Buy brand, which had the highest level
