In 2010, the LCBO set a target to reduce lost-time injuries by 50 per
cent over the following five years. It was an ambitious goal that the
Ontario retailer smashed to bits by 2015.
The success stems from a program that created a culture of health,
safety, and wellness, investing in people to make safety central to the
business, and establishing innovative product-handling systems to
prevent and reduce workplace injuries.
George Soleas, President and CEO of LCBO, says the company's
focus on employee health spans the entire organization. "Our collective efforts in the area of health and safety have really succeeded
in making it more than just a set of rules-a 'safety-first' mindset for
all our employees is taking hold. Staff across the organization have
worked together to create this culture change and receiving this
award from our retail peers is an encouraging endorsement of our
ongoing efforts," he says.
As for results, the LCBO beat its goal by 17 per cent. "By focusing
on the area of health and safety we have reduced lost-time injuries at
LCBO by 67 per cent over just five years. These are stellar results and
I am always happy to see numbers trending in the right direction, but
what is most important to me is that employees return home healthy
and safe," he says.

Edmonton Showcase Store

In 2015, Canadian Tire opened its one-of-a-kind "Showcase"
store in Edmonton, Alberta. At 140,000 square feet, the store
is the largest Canadian Tire store in history and provides
customers with dynamic digital technology experiences and
a huge product assortment. The store features the first-ever
execution of a drive simulator, a 3-D patio builder, a dedicated
drive-thru customer pickup zone for ecommerce, and more.
Customers love the new store, says Micheline Davies, VicePresident, Store Design and Field Merchandise, Canadian Tire.
Since opening its doors, the Showcase has seen significant
double digit increases year-over-year in customer traffic and
in average basket size. "Many customers have commented that
they could easily spend hours in the store as there is so much to
see and experience," says Davies.

Hudson's Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue
Together in One Historic Location
HBC faced an unenviable challenge: to bring the iconic Saks
Fifth Avenue luxury department store to the historic Hudson's
Bay Queen Street location, and create a distinct yet complementary shopping destination. HBC reconfigured the space
and renovated the 120-year old building over two years. The
result has generated an increase in both traffic and sales at
HBC and showcased Saks' special brand of luxury retailing.
The store within a store concept has proved to be such an innovative use of real-estate that HBC will consider leveraging
its footprint around the globe.
