system is expected to generate over 550,000 kWh
per year (that's the equivalent of 80 homes) in energy,
while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more
than 350 tonnes per year.
Inside the store, LED lamps and fixtures will reduce electricity devoted to lighting by more than
40 per cent, when compared to traditional halogen
light fixtures. In addition, electric car charging stations will also be installed in the parking lot adjacent to the store.
Peter Simons says that the company will take
sustainability a step further in its relocated store at
Les Galeries de la Capitale in Quebec City-when
it opens, it will be the company's first zero-carbon
location. Solar panels, LED lighting, electric car
recharging stations and other innovative technologies will be included and it won't be cheap-the estimated cost of the new 80,000-square-foot space will
be about $50 million.
To further build efficiencies into the company, as
well as to ensure that national distribution is optimized, Simons is in the process of planning to open
a new robotic fulfillment warehouse at an estimated
cost of about $80 million.
Simons is also focusing on optimizing its online
experience, with e-commerce now representing

almost 20 per cent of Simons' total sales (almost
everything in Simons' stores is also available online). It's quality over quantity at the moment, explained Peter Simons. As a result, the company's
pace of store openings will be slowed down for the
time being. Several existing stores will be renovated with environmental sustainability added
where possible-including the multi-level Montreal
Sainte-Catherine Street flagship, which will see
renovated interiors as well as reconfigured departments and floor plates.
"We want to do things that are meaningful," said
Peter Simons, including renovating historical buildings, building great partnerships, and continuing to
support artists within its stores. It's the human touch
that's important, which is even reflected in the company's hiring. "I'm about heart," explained Peter Simons, stating that ideal employees "have a fundamental desire and pleasure to serve." He says that Simons
is more likely to hire a candidate who does charitable
work, and that empathy and humility are necessary
traits that allows one to learn. As the company looks to
the future, Peter Simons wants to leave a legacy that's
more than just a chain of fashion stores-he wants to
help make the world a better place for future generations, while also ensuring they look their best.
