REBOUNDING
AFTER DISASTER
With the help of fellow retailers across the
country, flood-ravaged Alberta independent
bookseller is on the road to recovery
BY ANDREW HIND
THIS PAST JUNE Sandi Rowley and Lisa Sigglekow, the mother-daughter duo
who own Pixie Hollow Bookstore in High River, Alberta, watched as their work of
five years was washed away by floodwaters. Pixie Hollow was amongst the worst
ravaged businesses in town during the Alberta flooding in the spring of 2013.
The day of the flood was terrifying for the store's owners. The months since have
been trying and heartbreaking. They remember it like it was yesterday.
"My mother opened the store at 9am that day. There were a few customers,
but then a close friend came in and told her to lift things off the ground and
place sandbags in front of the store because of the rapidly rising water," explains Sigglekow. "It wasn't long before water was pouring over the bags and
bursting through the windows. My Mother ran out the back door. By then the
water was waist deep through the downtown. Mom had to be taken out by a
town rescue vehicle because cars were swamped by the deep waters."
The entire town of High River was evacuated later that afternoon. Eleven days
afterward the waters had receded and the streets were made safe enough so residents could slowly begin returning to their homes. Lisa and Sandi had an idea of
the damage that awaited them because of helicopter footage that they had seen,
but witnessing first-hand the ruined state of their store was a terrible shock. The
water had risen 4-5 feet high, the foundation was completely washed away in the
basement, the whole place was filled with mud, and the entire inventory was completely destroyed. There is still no date for re-opening Pixie Hollow. The damage
was so extensive that the historic building may need to be torn down and rebuilt.
Ironically, Sigglekow and Rowley had finally purchased the building last year to
ensure their store remained a permanent fixture in High River.
This year's devastation in southern Alberta was a painful and sobering experience. Many realized, too late, that they simply weren't prepared for a disaster and all that followed.
It's a lesson that all small business owners can learn from. To prepare for
natural disasters, retailers don't need to look for incentive any further than the
devastation so graphically captured on television screens and on the front page
of newspapers nationwide. Flooding, storms, tornadoes, wildfires...it can happen anywhere, and to anyone.
