SUPPLY CHAIN PROFESSIONALS INCREASINGLY
EMPLOYING CHATBOTS TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY
Supply chain and logistics business intelligence firm eft
conducted its annual Hot Trends in Supply Chain report, which
suggests businesses are quickly considering the use of chatbot
technology in an effort to better manage supply chains.

EU CONCERNS LEAD CANADA TO
IMPORT MORE EUROPEAN CHEESE
FOR RETAILERS
The new European trade deal, which took
hold Sept. 21 this year, includes 18,000
tonnes of new cheese imports phased in
over the next 5 years.

30% of the food collected from
retailers that is already expired
and goes straight to local farmers
to feed livestock.

Negotiations took
place in Brussels
earlier in the
summer where it
was determined
that half the new
quota of European
cheese will go
to the domestic
industry's cheese
makers while the
other
half
is
allocated
to distributors and end retailers, each
receiving
about
8,000
tonnes
of new quota.
Imports constitute
about five per cent
of Canada's current
cheese market. The
new EU cheese will
bump that to nine
per cent (7.5 per
cent will be from
Europe).

The Kamloops' Food Share
program diverted 700,000
kilograms of perishable food
from landfills in 2016.

1% - The federal government believes that
because consumer demand is rising by about
one per cent per year, the Canadian industry
can adjust, given the five-year phase-in.

51%

Percentage of businesses that say they are
engaging with chatbot technology in 2017.
This is in contrast to the 79% that said they
were not engaging chatbots in 2016.

EXTRAORDINARY FOODBANK LANDFILL
DIVERSION PROGRAM EXPANDING ACROSS B.C.
As the demand for food banks continues to rise in British Columbia, the Kamloops Food Bank is mentoring 100 smaller food
banks across the province regarding food waste
diversion as part of its FoodShare program.
In 2016 the Food Share program saved
$5 million worth of food from landfills.

DESPITE E-COMMERCE GROWTH, SHOPPING
MALLS ARE BOOMING
E-commerce sales are on this rise in Canada. And, although
the growth of online may be pinching some retailers late to the
e-commerce game, Canadian malls are continuing to thrive,
reflected in increasing development.

Retail e-commerce sales
in Canada were worth
an estimated $34 billion
in 2016, according to
market research company
eMarketer. However, that's
only 6.5 per cent of the
more than $520 billion
Canadians spent on retail
purchases last year.

In 2013, Cadillac Fairview spent $86
million on a renovation of Montreal's
Galeries d'Anjou.

While consumers still like to touch fabrics and try on clothes,
it's not the same for electronics, said Avi Krispine, the executive
vice-president and managing director of Quebec operations for
commercial real estate and investment firm CBRE. That sector
has seen a 10.2 per cent year-over-year decrease in sales per
square foot, he said.
