Former Toronto police chief, Bill
Blair, explored how external violence-including the infamous gun
deaths of two people and wounding of
four others at the city's Eaton Centre-
can have traumatic repercussions.
"Simply solving the crime isn't
enough," he said of the mall shootings. "As a matter of fact, it's only the
tip of the iceberg. What was really
required was to restore public confidence and their sense of security."
Without that, people become too
afraid to venture out to stores, malls
and their communities, leaving a devastating economic and social impact.
Cooperation between law enforcement and the private sector is critical
to maintaining public confidence,
whether in the perception of neighbourhood safety or the ability to
make secure credit and debit card
purchases. "There is a growing realization within the police community," Blair said, "that we cannot succeed in the mission that we've taken
on to protect our citizens and to keep
our cities and communities safe without a strong partnership with you."
He added: "We have to make sure
that the data that you have that is relevant to the work that we're doing to
keep our communities safe is shared."

Security analyst and author, Robert Siciliano.
Violence from within

Security analyst and author Robert Siciliano spoke about the issue
of workplace violence, examining it
from an internal perspective.
"We live in a society where violence has become commonplace,"
he said, noting there has been a "tick
up" in violence in the workplace-by
both employees and customers-
that requires proactive vigilance,
planning and training on the retailer's part in order to tackle.
"Benjamin Franklin once said
'to be safe means never to be secure,'" Siciliano said. "The moment
you think 'okay, we are safe, we
are secure, we have nothing to be
concerned about'-that's when bad
things happen. To be safe means
always being on your toes. To be secure means always being aware."
Loss prevention's heavy load

That sentiment could stand as
the conference's overriding theme,
to wit: loss prevention and security
personnel must be constantly on the
lookout for criminal malfeasance,
whether internally or externally, in
the bricks-and-mortar world and in
the no-man's-land of cyberspace. It
can be an onerous, often thankless,
but absolutely vital burden to carry.
The Home Depot's Farshchi struck a
defining, pragmatic chord for the day.
"Our goal here is not to say that
you could get to the point where

there's never going to be any unknown unknowns," he said, citing
Donald Rumsfeld's famous aphorism
about the uncertain future. "There
always will be, especially in the security space. But with meaningful
instrumentation, with meaningful
dialogue and communication within
your teams and your organization,
there's a way to minimize the number of unknown unknowns."
