FeatUre asa-cip to co-host Join marine Salvage, firefighting, environmental response and casualty management Workshop The hyatt house miami airport hotel miami, florida June 13-15, 2016 I t is an exciting time for the asa with many things happening. as most members are no doubt aware, we are actively promoting the upcoming training seminar that the asa is co-sponsoring with the organization of american states' (oas) inter-american committee on ports (cip). this seminar will target senior port authority representatives from the 35 member states of the americas and will be held in miami over June 13-15, 2016. it will be a perfect opportunity to promote the improvement of salvage and wreck removal standards throughout the americas. this event represents the first major product of our new relationship with oas-cip and we expect it will be the first of many such events. the asa leadership team continues to be extremely pleased by the support of Jorge Durán, chief of the secretariat, inter-american committee on ports (s/ cip), and his staff and it is an honor and pleasure to introduce mr. Durán to our members. mr. Durán states, "on behalf of the 35 member countries of the cip i would like to thank todd schauer for his kind welcome and introduction to the asa membership. i am certain that our collaborative efforts will benefit both memberships. in this context, it is with great satisfaction that we announce the first training Workshop between asa and the cip secretariat (s/cip). our member states and associate members attach great importance to environmental protection, including port and marine disaster mitigation, as well as contingency and emergency response plans. the cip -oas is committed to address these issues by raising awareness and by contributing to increase technical and institutional capacities. With the invaluable expertise from asa on salvage and wreck removal in this Workshop, we believe cip members will greatly benefit from its experience and best practices but it also presents the opportunity for them to participate sharing their own experiences." the inter-american committee on ports (cip) of the organization of american states (oas) in partnership with the american salvage association (asa) will be holding a workshop with senior port authority officials from the 34 member countries, asa members, and cip staff. Experts from the salvage, wreck removal, marine firefighting and environmental 16 * Soundings spring 2016 response communities will present best practices, case studies and lessons learned over a three day event. Effective casualty management will be highlighted, including from government and port authority perspectives. legal issues will be discussed including salvage law, wreck removal issues, and the impact of various international conventions. attendees will be invited to participate on panel sessions to share their own experiences. the workshop is expected to be fantastic opportunity for networking and information sharing and the asa and cip are pleased to sponsor this inaugural partnership event.
