FEATURE ASA-NAMEPA SCIENCES COMPETITION YEARS-IN-REVIEW By Carleen Lyden-Kluss North American Marine Environmental Protection Association T Photos courtesy Chris Preovolos he American Salvage Association and the North American Marine Environmental Protection Association have jointly sponsored a Marine Sciences competition for high schools and colleges for the past several years. Eligible for awards are experimental science or engineering projects involving marine sciences that were conducted at the high school or undergraduate college level. Projects should focus on one of the following broad marine science areas: Marine Environmental Care, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Meteorology, Underwater Robotics, Air Emissions from Ships, Alternative Fuel Supplies for Ships, Oil and Chemical Spill Remediation, Offshore Well Control, Diving Systems, Marine Biology, Marine Ecosystems, Marine Microorganisms, Ship Design, Ship Breaking, Recovery of Sunken Ships, Cargo, Fuel or Pollutants, related Marine Salvage or Marine Environmental projects. The following is a breakdown of awardees for the 2014, 2013 and 2012 competition seasons. The 2015 season closed on October 1st and winners will be announced by October 15th. NAMEPA Marine Science Project Awards 2014 1st Place - Andrew Kim Clay Maitland, RADM Paul Thomas and Doug Martin with marine science award winner Andy Kim High School Hi, my name is Andy Kim and I am 15 years old.  I live in The Woodlands, Texas and attend high school at the Academy of Science and Technology at College Park. I am in my freshman year and I will graduate high school in 2018.  I absolutely love science and marvel at how medicine is developing. In the future, I hope to go to a medical school to delve into a specialized field of medicine, like ophthalmology or neurology.  I am involved in Boy Scouts, where I am striving to become an Eagle Scout while enjoying my other hobbies (tennis and piano). 2nd Place - Michael Bohnet My name is Michael Bohnet, and I am a 15 year old sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas. I attend College Park High School where I will graduate in 2017. I earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the boy scouts, and I am an active member of our school's wrestling team.
