Since December 2016, your National Board
has been developing a three-year strategic
plan carrying us through fiscal year 2020. A
lot of data was collected and reviewed in the
development, with some fine-tuning of the
plan still in the works. I am proud to say that
the National Board has a strong plan for
SGMP's future that includes significant input
from all of you. If you participated in one of
the recent membership (see highlights in
this issue on page 23) or strategic planning
surveys, your voice was heard. Ideas directly
from these surveys were included in our
planning for the future of SGMP.
As indicated, our strategic plan is not
quite ready for full publication; however, I can
share the overall intent or, in other words,
where we want to be by June 30, 2020:
SGMP will be recognized as the premier
knowledge resource on government meetings.
To achieve this goal, SGMP will ...
1. be a growing and financially
stable organization.
2. be the premier resource center on
government meetings.
3. deliver timely and valued content that
enhances government meetings.
4. provide valued benefits for planners
and suppliers.
Obviously, there are a lot of action steps
that need to occur in order to achieve these
goals, and those are the items that are being
finalized. However, right after our first strategic
planning meeting through today, we have
already completed 23 of 34 tasks identified
for completion by March 31, 2017. There are
even a few items identified for next quarter that
also have been completed. I am proud of our

board and its dedication to the success of the
society. I look forward to sharing the strategic
plan in more detail with you, and all of our
members, in the near future.
I am excited to see you all at the 2017 NEC
and at future national education events. Our
keynote speakers are Deborah Gardner and
Dale Henry, who I believe everyone will enjoy.
The Gilmer Trustees have done an excellent
job of lining up speakers for breakout
sessions who will appeal to all segments of
our membership - planner to supplier and
newbie to veteran. So if you have not yet
registered, what are you waiting for?
There are still perceptions that the 2017
NEC will be our last one. I can assure you
it is not the last time there will be national
education events. Strategic planning survey
comments, as well as board members, feel
strongly about the need for continued national
education. Likely, by the time you read this
article, announcements will already have been
made about future national education events.
I am excited for SGMP to realize its strategic
vision, knowing it will increase the benefit of
membership to our current and future members.
It will not be easy, but I know the dedication of
our members and board members will see it
through. As we work on achieving our strategic
objectives, there will be calls for action and
volunteerism needed from all you, as we can only
achieve our goal with all of us working together.
SGMP Ignite!!
Your dedicated leader,

Michelle A. Milligan, MSW, LMSW, CGMP
