EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S

CORNER
Moving Forward
By way of introduction, my name is
Pamela Valenzuela, and I serve as your
new SGMP executive director. As many of
you know, last summer SGMP's Board of
Directors made some changes in how the
society is managed. SGMP is now managed
by a highly engaged, interactive Board of
Directors and association management
company. These changes addressed a need
to trim expenses, manage operations more
efficiently, and resolve complaints about
membership and chapter administration.
The board also was looking for new ideas
for membership recruitment, retention,
communications, education and a way
forward for the society.
Now that we are in the early part of 2017,
I am proud to report that the process of
transition to our association management
firm, ASCENT Management, LLC, is well in
hand. Our firm helps SGMP take advantage
of economies of scale to provide able
management, a stable headquarters,
financial services including review of
monthly chapter financials and preparation
and filing of chapter year-end financial
reports to the IRS, and membership
administration and marketing. Your Board
of Directors partners with us to deliver
on SGMP's mission by fulfilling important
roles to the society's operations. Board
members prepare content for the SGMP
Government Connections and e-Link,
facilitate chapter leader calls, respond to
chapter treasurer's questions, craft email
announcements to the members, update
the website, coordinate the NEC & Expo
and handle social media. Garland Preddy,
education director, continues to manage/
develop the education program and train
and administer the CGMP.

You also should know that together
we have been in the process of strategic
planning for SGMP during the course of the
last several months to create a sustainable
path of growth and vitality. It's true that
SGMP has faced a number of challenges
in recent years. This is why we felt it was
so important to hear from you in our latest
2017 Membership Satisfaction Survey.
(See highlights from the survey in this
issue on page 23.) We are grateful to those
of you who took the time to give us your
feedback - the good and the bad. It is only
by building on our organization's strengths
while addressing any setbacks head-on
that we can make progress. It is our goal to
take these lessons learned and incorporate
them into our three-year strategic plan.
We understand that times of change can
be uncertain and scary. Count on us for
honest straight talk about what is to come.
We are excited about the opportunities
that exist for SGMP in the months and
years ahead. We've heard your request
for more return on investment for your
membership, more concise and substantial
communication, and more educational
opportunities that meet you where you are. I
assure you that it is at the top of our agenda,
and your Board of Directors is actively
working on those very issues right now.
Thank you for welcoming my staff and
me to the SGMP team. I have no doubt that
there will be more positive developments to
report as time moves on. We look forward
to the collaboration.
