SGMP: A Very Easy Sell
CHRISTOPHER MCLAUGHLIN

In addition to my involvement with
SGMP, I am the director of national sales
for an international hotel company. After
overseeing this specialty market for nearly
15 years, I can confidently confirm that my
participation with SGMP has been one of my
greatest career assets. It has enabled me to
become a stronger business partner to my
customers, as well as a more viable subject
matter expert to my hotel community.
Recently, an industry colleague asked me
how I was able to convince several planners

and suppliers to join SGMP. My response
was simple, "SGMP is a very easy sell."
From a professional development vantage,
I firmly believe continuing education is
foundational to sustained success. As an
opinion leader, I consider SGMP the clear
leader of all professional associations
related to the government. SGMP offers
balanced, practical learning opportunities
to both our planners and suppliers. This
ultimately fosters stronger collaboration that
results in trusted partnerships.

Speaking from my experience, the
Superheroes Circle program offered
by SGMP is an outstanding way for
everyone to be more resourceful to
planners and suppliers. The education
and networking that every member gains
through participating in SGMP is valuable.
The camaraderie that is built through
befriending so many colleagues who share
such strong, common commitments is
rewarding, plus it is something that is rare
in today's business world.

How SGMPAZ Scores a
Membership Touchdown
MICHELLE FINK

The Arizona Chapter has been lucky
this year, in that the business economy
is growing, local governments are hiring,
and suppliers are looking for government
business. The Super Bowl brought
focus on Phoenix and new government
conferences want to come to this great
city. Phoenix is growing and has seen
7.3 percent growth in restaurants and
bars. Ten hotels are under construction
and others are getting million dollar
renovations. This seems to be the perfect
atmosphere for SGMPAZ to attract new
members and current members are
excited by increased tourism and revenue.
How we do that is to:
1. Meet Members' Needs - Get to know
your members well, including what
they're looking for in a membership,
issues they're struggling with, goals
they have, and tools they can use. Then,
use the information to help grow your
membership numbers.
2. Talk about Benefits, Not Just
Metrics - Showcase the benefits to
members: how members connect at our

meetings, how much positive feedback
members have about the speakers or
programs, spotlight a planner with a big
meeting, and build a friendship.
At our meeting, we introduce every new
person in the room. If they didn't meet
before the meeting, now everyone knows
that new person. The property host is on
the agenda and has five to 10 minutes
to showcase the hotel, show a video or
PowerPoint. If the member can't take a tour
after the meeting, they will have seen the
highlights in the presentation. This shows
great ROI for both parties. We show photos
of the previous month's speaker and hotel,
which provides more recognition and builds
ROI for the hotels that host meetings.
We encourage current members
to bring a guest and new members to
join. Members get five points for every
new person they bring to a meeting,
and 10 points if they join. After the April
membership drive, the person with the
most points will win a hotel night certificate.
3. Make It Personal - Finally, be sure
to make your outreach as personal

as possible. We email each meeting
announcement four times to the
chapter. In the meanwhile, they also
get invitations to hotel grand openings,
member appreciation events, and
other special events or discounts. An
email from a board member gets faster
response than an email sent from
the website.
4. Raffle Items - This attracts members
and they desire those raffle tickets!
Have fun with the raffle items and
selling the tickets. The person selling
the tickets gets to meet the most
people! It's a great icebreaker and
people want to buy the tickets.
Note: Taking payment for the program
meeting and raffle tickets by credit card
has made a big increase in our raffle sales.
Realistically, our members stay for about
three years on average. They receive the
professional development training they
need, and they move up to new jobs. Our
long-term members keep coming because
they love the training, the networking and
the fun AZ chapter members.
