Well-planned site selection
process assists in preparing for a
successful event

W

hen a planner begins the
process of creating a new
event or selecting a new
location for a recurring
one, there are many factors to consider
in the hope of surpassing expectations
of the planner and attendees.
"Select a city where all the hospitality
partners work very well together,"
suggested Sherry Chambers, senior
director of sales for the SMG-managed
Greater Columbus Convention Center
(GCCC). "As a meeting planner, you
want to provide the hotel or convention
center with as much information about
the function and demographics of the
attendees as you can so the sales team
can prepare the best possible proposal
to meet every need you have."
As the leader of a sales team composed
of certied meeting professionals and
certied tourism ambassadors (CTAs),
Chambers is accustomed to guiding
planners needing to balance costs with
the excellence they intend to achieve.
"While there's a reason for the saying,
'You get what you pay for,' in Columbus,
we balance being one of the most
affordable cities in which to host trade
shows with providing added value and
great customer service," she said.
You may have heard "location, location,
location" is a focus of real-estate agents.
Event planners also should follow the
same path when selecting a site.
"Safety of the host city should be a
very important consideration for your
attendees, including the availability of
attached hotels and parking facilities,"
Chambers added.

For instance, Columbus is known for
being an open and smart city situated
within a day's drive or an hour ight of
the majority of the nation's population.
Connected to the GCCC by enclosed

walkway are ve hotels. The facility
manages 4,000 parking spaces, including
three parking garages connected to the
venue by enclosed walkways. Among
them is the new 800-space Goodale
Garage soon adjoining the newly
constructed section of the facility
being built as part of the $125 million
expansion & renovation project to be
completed in July 2017.
Also important to the site selection
process is the navigability of the venue
and surrounding area. Just outside the
GCCC are the Arena District and Short
North Art District, which has a team of
ambassadors to assist guests. Within
the convention center is the city's
largest contingent of CTAs providing
knowledgeable assistance to visitors
throughout their stay.

The GCCC has a colorful exterior with
many geometric angles, yet the interior
features a linear layout with exhibit
halls on one side of the main concourse
and meeting rooms and ballrooms on
the other, providing event planners
with the proximity of space they nd
attractive for concurrent functions.
Columbus also features the free CBUS,
a bus that circulates throughout the
downtown area, providing attendees
with a shuttle for groups wanting to ride
together to a restaurant or conveniently
transport newly purchased shopping
discoveries to their hotels.
As you can see, a site's existing total
package of features can make a meeting
planner the star of the show in the eyes
of attendees!
