Many people get tired of hearing that their
organization is going through a time of great
change, and I am sure that SGMP members
are no different. Nonetheless, at this time we
find ourselves immersed in just that - a time
of great change.
With the departure of our former CEO,
the National Board undertook a review of
our national staff structure. We concluded
the most forward-looking and cost-effective
strategy was a transition to an association
management company. After careful review,
we hired ASCENT Management, LLC of
Alexandria, Virginia, led by Pam Valenzuela,
CAE, to oversee membership, accounting
and executive functions. Director of
Education and Training Garland Preddy,
CGMP, remains with the organization,
under contract.
Several changes have occurred on the
National Board as well. President Maggie
McGowan, CGMP, CMP, and 2nd Vice
President James Lynton, CGMP, resigned
their positions for personal reasons. SGMP
bylaws dictate that the 1st Vice President
assumes the position of President when
a vacancy occurs. The Board did some
restructuring by appointing Ann Koralewski,
CGMP, CMP, to 1st Vice President, and
Kimberly Forte, CGMP, to 2nd Vice President.
Carolyn Wooten, CGMP (Louisiana Chapter),
and Marie Arighi, CMP, CHSP (Rocket City
Alabama Chapter), were then appointed to fill
the vacant Director positions.
As I put this to paper, it makes me realize
what a significant impact these changes will
have on our organization, and it is important
to consider how we manage this change. The

GOVERNMENT CONNECTIONS | FALL/WINTER 2016

National Board has chosen to emphasize
consistent communication, transparency and
the importance of membership input. To this
end, we recently released a call for member
volunteers to lend their expertise to a number
of national committees and task forces.
By including you, our greatest asset in the
process of change, we know the overall result
will provide the most benefit to the Society.
We recognize that membership numbers
have been a concern, but it appears we have
turned a corner and with the hiring of Jackie
Fenwick as a dedicated SGMP membership
position within ASCENT Management, this
progress will continue and grow. In addition,
ASCENT Management will soon be working
with the National Membership Committee
in the development of updated membership
marketing. Recommendations by the
Blue Ribbon Taskforce will be reflected in
these efforts.
Something I have come to realize about
my own agency, as well as about SGMP, is
that the only constant is change, and we can
either choose to embrace change and use it
as a positive force or become an organization
that is mired in the past. The National Board
and ASCENT Management have chosen to
embrace change and use it to build a Society
that will continue to address the needs of our
members for the next generation.
SGMP Ignite!!
Your dedicated leader,

Michelle Milligan, MSW, LMSW, CGMP
