NATION OLD DOMINION CELEBRATES 25 YEARS By Harriett Edmunds MEMORIES AND HISTORY! That’s what Old Dominion chapter members enjoyed on December 6th at their 25th anniversary banquet. Current and past members and their guests gathered to enjoy an evening of what SGMP is all about—planners and suppliers gathering together to support the industry, the profession and their chapter. Chapter President Joyce Fogg was supported by co-masters of ceremonies Harriett Edmunds and Dolores Esser (Esser also served as the keynote speaker). Chapter member Debra Kilpatrick, CGMP, represented the National Board of Directors and all founding chapter members were introduced. A stroll down memory lane described how the chapter got its start. Charter member Carleen Lombardo remembered that Carl Thompson (former SGMP National President and SGMP Executive Director) and member Caroline Ederer were driving on an Interstate highway after one of the organizational meetings. They passed a delivery truck with “Old Dominion” in the company name and deemed this a fitting name for the chapter. The chapter’s rich history—which includes four Sam Gilmer Award recipients—was also celebrated. How proud were all attendees to be reminded of the chapter’s eight Program of the Year awards, three Newsletter of the Year awards, its Chapter Merit and Chapter Honors awards and several membership awards. The list of names of all former board members was projected on a screen during the entire evening, giving the attendees an idea of how many people have worked hard to bring success to the chapter over the years. One source of pride is the sense of family that its members have toward one another. Twenty five years later, the chapter remains very strong and is always striving to be better. And now, as Old Dominion celebrates its many successes, all of its members look forward to the future. They will continue in the footsteps of past and present leaders to provide quality education to planners and suppliers and a return on investment to both our government and hospitality industry members. 23
