By Rob Coffman, CGMP
Rob Bergeron, CAE,
I don’t have to tell anyone reading this that the past
12 months for the government meetings industry were quite
challenging for SGMP members. Planners and suppliers alike
have been the focus of an unwanted limelight with increased
scrutiny, expanded approval processes, additional budget
cuts and pending (or real) furloughs.
That limelight continues. It is not only unwanted. In so
many cases, it is undeserved.
While our industry suffered through this period of
upheaval, SGMP also suffered through one of its most turbulent times in memory.
As I highlighted in my State of the Society address last month at our 2013 NEC,
our organization has also seen some wonderful highlights and achievements in
fulfilling our mission of education.
Our tax-exemption allows for lobbying, but our mission centers on education.
Education has never been more important – ever!
I hope that you have noticed an SGMP that is striving for focus, concentrating
on priorities and being defined by education. We have so many achievements
with which to be proud:
Since the 2012 NEC in New Orleans, our primary education accomplishments
• We completely revamped the CGMP certification program.
• We opened the brand new SGMP Training Center in our headquarters.
• We launched a brand new adjunct faculty.
• We created a brand new Subject Matter Expert list.
• We added brand new ready-to-use programs to our chapter toolkit.
• We revised our education core competency list.
I look forward to starting the new term of your national board of directors
with a national board strategic planning session in July. I look forward to serving
you and all SGMP members for another exciting and successful term in office.
