F E AT U R E 2015 SGMP NATIONAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE & EXPO S GMP hosted its 33rd annual National Education Conference & Expo April 28-30 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Members enjoyed three days of education and networking at the Hilton Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Convention Center. The event kicked off with a lively welcome reception sponsored by Meet Minneapolis on Tuesday evening, celebrating the diverse culture of the region through cuisine, music and art. Mayor Betsy Hodges stopped by during the opening ceremony on Wednesday to welcome everyone to Minneapolis, and reminded attendees of the value of face-to-face meetings for all stakeholders, while sharing the economic impact of conferences on the Minneapolis community. Aric Bostick fired up the crowd as the opening keynote speaker, raising over 500 attendees to their feet during the breakfast. Chris Young rounded out the event-packed conference with the closing keynote address on Thursday. All participants earned eight contact hours toward multiple industry certification programs by attending their choice of sessions in a variety of core competencies such as protocol, logistics, technology and leadership. 24 As usual, one of the highlights of the NEC was the Sam Gilmer Awards Banquet, hosted by 2016 NEC host, the San Diego Tourism Authority. The Sam Gilmer Planner of the Year award went to Debra Kilpatrick, CGMP, while Kimberly Forte, CGMP, took home the Supplier of the Year award. The Sam Gilmer Award is the highest distinction presented by SGMP. The 2015-2017 National Board of Directors took their oaths of office as well during the event. The new board includes Maggie McGowan, CGMP, CMP, President; Michelle Milligan, MSW, LMSW, CGMP, First Vice President; James Lynton, CGMP, Second Vice President; Maurine Hill, Secretary; Brett Sterenson, Treasurer; Directors Tecumseh Deloney, CGMP, CMP, Kimberly Forte, CGMP, and Ann Koralewski, CGMP, CMP; and Rob Coffman, CGMP, Immediate Past President. Two new trustees were also sworn in to the Gilmer Institute of Learning: Patty Barron, CGMP, and Mark Richardson, CGMP. They will serve two terms that were vacated when two trustees moved to the national board. Other awards presented that evening include the Partnership Award, which went to Hyatt Hotels, and the President's Award, which went to Chele Clark, CGMP. The Pacific Northwest chapter took home the Programming of the Year Award for the third straight year, and the Michigan GOVERNMENT CONNECTIONS | FALL/WINTER 2015 chapter received the top Communications of the Year Award. The Membership Growth Award went to the Rocket City Alabama chapter. More than $21,000 was raised through an online auction, live auction and the sale of professional head shots, all organized by the Gilmer Institute of Learning for 2016 NEC scholarships. The live auction took place after the Gilmer Awards Banquet, and included items such as an African safari and vacation packages around the country. Twenty SGMP members earned their CGMP designation in Minneapolis just prior to the NEC as a part of the NEC Pre-Conference Programming sessions. These members arrived early to the NEC and earned their certification before registration had even opened. SGMP partnered with Women's Advocates for a hands-on charity event on site at both the hotel and the convention center. Participants helped repackage bulk items into individual-sized portions for beneficiaries of the program. The Northern Lights chapter identified and arranged for this charity outreach. Approximately 90 percent of respondents that participated in a post-conference survey said that the education content and the education faculty met or exceeded their expectations and nearly that amount indicated that they would encourage colleagues to attend the 2016 NEC in San Diego.
