MEET A MEMBER HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF SGMP? I have been with the Michigan Chapter of SGMP since 2005. WHAT IS THE BEST SGMP MEETING/ CONFERENCE THAT YOU HAVE EVER ATTENDED? WHY? I have been very impressed and satisfied with all of our meetings, along with the AEC and the NEC & Expo. The one that sticks out the most is one that I facilitated. It was titled, “There is a Sales Call on Line 1.” The reason I liked that one the most was because we educated our membership to understand that we as suppliers are going to cold call our planners and we are going to prospect you. With that we asked the panel along with the membership, “How do you want to be prospected?” It was a great session to discuss the importance of our partnership. Nick Hussein WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK? DoubleTree by Hilton Bay City-Riverfront Nick Hussein is the second vice president and membership chair for the Michigan Chapter. HOW HAS SGMP PLAYED A PART IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT? SGMP has helped me with organization, the value of commitment and the importance of professional relationships. All of this, along with being a chapter board member, has allowed me to grow and utilize the education that I have received to be a better supplier and grow within our industry. I enjoy my family and family time. We like to spend our free time camping and boating. We love the water. I recently earned my undergrad in business administration, and I am currently enrolled in the master’s program. I hope to have my master’s by 2015 and pursue my passion to teach at the college level. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? My father said it best: “Work hard when you are younger, and you will play when you are older.” With that I chose the hospitality industry and never looked back. When I lecture at the local university on my career and the hospitality industry, I always tell them to think as if the glass is half empty in our industry. It is our job to keep the glass full. The first time you think it’s half full, you will not provide the best service that our guests deserve. 15
