I joined SGMP to improve my skills as a meeting
planner, and I see education as the best benefit.
Chapter educational programs, regional conferences
and the National Education Conference offer high
quality sessions relevant for meeting professionals.
Networking with other members is a very close second.
WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST
IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU
WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE IN THE
GOVERNMENT MEETINGS INDUSTRY?
Be proud of what you do and always remember
that we (planners and suppliers) are stewards of the
public trust, so high ethical standards are paramount.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN
A MEMBER OF SGMP?
I've been a member of SGMP for
19 years as a government planner in
the Texas Lone Star Capital Chapter.
I recently joined the Rocky Mountain
Chapter as well. Since retiring earlier
this year, I'm now working as a
contract planner providing training,
presentations and facilitation services.
"It's often easier to beg forgiveness than to get
permission." It's about courage and confidence,
and the caveat is that the risks must be prudent -
assess the consequences and be prepared to
take responsibility for the outcomes.
HOW HAS THE CGMP DESIGNATION HELPED YOU
IN YOUR CAREER?
The comprehensive curriculum covers all aspects of meeting
planning, so I increased my knowledge and skills even though I've
been planning meetings for over 30 years. My experience is in state
government so learning about the federal regulations was invaluable
as I hope to contract with federal agencies in the future. The CGMP
designation has also benefited me as a leader in SGMP, and I'm proud
to be part of a team that will be teaching some of the CGMP classes.
